UWF Finishes 8th at World Golf Invite

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 25 nationally-ranked University of West Florida women's golf team tied for eighth place at the World Golf Invitational hosted by Flagler College at World Golf Village earlier in the week.

The tournament featured 10 of the nation's top 25 teams. The Argos shot 922 (+58) as a team over the 72 holes of play. With the score UWF finished ahead of two teams who are currently ranked ahead of them in the national rankings (Saint Leo - #10 and Lander - #21).

Individually, the Argos were led by Millie Thompson who placed fifth overall in a field of 87 golfers. Thompson shot 221 (+5) which included a final round score of 71 (-1).

The teams faced poor weather in the practice round which posed challenges in strategy planning and then difficult course conditions in the early rounds. In addition, the teams had the opportunity to play the iconic "King & Bear" course for this year's tournament which is a course designed by the famous Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. In previous years, teams have played the "Slammer & Squire" sister course.

"We only got to play 13 of the 18 holes in the practice round," said head coach Kristen Dorsey. "It wasn't a good reflection of the actual tournament days."

Despite the poor weather early on, the Argos rallied to put together a strong performance and shot 22 over as a team in round one. "We were only seven shots out of the lead after the first round,"
Dorsey said. "The Argos did a good job. We didn't have standout player in the round, but everyone played solid."

In round two, Thompson began making moves with five birdies in the round. The junior finished the round just two over par. UWF shot three strokes better with a +19.

In the final round on Tuesday, the Argos got off to a hot start. The team made seven birdies within the first five holes en route to a +17 which was the Argos best round of the tournament. Thompson contributed to four of those after birdying holes one, two, four and five on her way to a one under 71 in the round. "I'm really proud of Millie for managing her emotions, going under par and staying under par, and she stayed under for the whole round," Dorsey said.

Thompson was named to the All-Tournament team.

UWF will continue to play against tough competition moving forward as they look to move their way up in the region. The next tournament for the Argos is the Lady Moc Classic hosted by Florida Southern on Feb. 24 and 25 at the Grasslands Country Club in Lakeland.
