Argos Sweep Spring Hill in Midweek Doubleheader

Argos knock eight doubles in two games, Guerriero steals six bags

MOBILE, Ala. – UWF Softball (11-6, 4-2) took both games in a midweek doubleheader against Spring Hill College (2-10, 0-0) Wednesday afternoon on Murray Field in Mobile.

The Argonauts claimed a 5-1 victory in game one before securing an 8-1 win in the second matchup. UWF recorded ten extra base hits including eight doubles. They continue to lead the Gulf South Conference in doubles (31), triples (12), home runs (15) and slugging percentage (.535). They are second in total team runs scored (102).

Gianna Guerriero stole six bases in the winning effort, and leads the GSC with a perfect 19 for 19 base stealing record. She also leads the conference in runs scored (20) and is fourth in total hits (24).

As of Wednesday night's stats, Angelia Discenza now leads DII softball in triples (6) after hitting two today against the Badgers. Her first two at bats of game one both went for RBI triples.

Haley Guffey (6-3) and Hannah Harper (5-1) both picked up wins in game one and two respectively. Guffey is fifth in the conference with six wins on the year, and Harper is tied for sixth with five wins. Guffey's 1.72 ERA is now fourth in the GSC.

UWF 5, SHC 1

West Florida (10-6) started strong, plating two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second, both coming off of Discenza triples scoring Guerriero. Erin Moon also scored Discenza on an RBI groundout. The Argos would go on to tally 12 hits including an unearned score from Harper in the fifth and a Bella Holliday sac bunt to score Brice again in the sixth.

Pitcher Haley Guffey (6-3) allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings while striking out four. The Argo defense backed her up with solid fielding, committing only one error in the contest.

Spring Hill (2-9) managed its lone run on a solo home run in the fourth inning but was otherwise stifled by Guffey's control in the circle for the 5-1 win.

UWF 8, SHC 1

The Argos wasted no time in game two, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looking back. They racked up 12 hits once again, with a Jessie Baughan RBI double in the first and a Brice RBI single. Erin Moon also contributed a sacrifice RBI to score Guerriero.

A fielder's choice scored a lone SHC runner in the second inning, but it was all UWF from then on. Nicole Mergen scored Baughan on an RBI single, Brianna Jennings scored Emma Brice off a double, and Moon doubled to bring in Discenza and Guerriero. The eighth run for the Argos came in the sixth off an error, allowing Moon to take home.

Hannah Harper (5-1) took the circle and pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. She was backed by strong defensive play, highlighted by a double play turned in the bottom of the sixth inning. UWF took game two 8-1.
