PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Argonauts split a doubleheader with Rollins on Saturday afternoon to win the weekend series at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos won the first game 5-3 and dropped the second 16-5.
GAME 1
West Florida took the early lead in the first inning after three batters were hit by pitches and another walked. The pitching errors brought
Jadon Fryman around to score. A second run was scored when
Zack Stokes hit into a fielder's choice, bringing
Cade Easterbrook home.
The eighth inning was pivotal for UWF. The Argos were coming off five innings with just two hits had given up two runs in the top of the inning allowing Rollins to tie the game at 3-3.
But the team responded with two runs to reclaim the lead.
Ben Maskin singled up the middle to get pinch runner
Parker Tubb to third base. Stokes then hit a sacrifice fly to get Tubb home for a 4-3 lead.
Gann Nobles single later in the inning drove Maskin home for the two-run lead.
"Neither team was really hitting the whole game, so you were waiting for something to happen there late really," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Our team responded big"
Grant Adams who came in relief for starting pitcher
Jacob Heath earned the win.
GAME 2
It was not the start the Argos were looking for in the second game of the day. Rollins scored 16 unanswered runs through the first four innings of the seven-inning contest. The Tars scored eight runs in the first inning, five in the second and one in the fourth.
"We've got a lot of improvement to do," said Jeffcoat. "We've got to learn to close and learn to be more competitive. There are a lot of new guys on the team, but a lot of veterans. We are trying to find our identity. We won the series, but you're only as good as your last game. We got to see if we can improve from some of the things we learned this week."
UWF did find some offense in the sixth and seventh innings to break up the shutout with two unearned runs in the sixth and a three-run homer by Easterbrook in the seventh.
Easterbrook led the Argos going 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
UWF (2-2) will prepare for Gulf South Conference action to begin on Friday at 5 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos will host Montevallo for the weekend.
