Baughan Hits Three Home Runs, Argos Split Twinbill With UAH

UWF takes game one 12-7, run-ruled in game two 3-11

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –  The Argos saw both ends of a high-scoring day of Softball in Huntsville Friday, as UWF (17-8, 10-4) split a doubleheader with the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers (14-13, 8-6).

Jessie Baughan highlighted the 12-7 win in game one, becoming the third Argo in program history to hit three home runs in a game. She joins Tabitha Hairelson (4/14/06 vs West Alabama) and Jessica Ford (4/12/24 vs Montevallo) as the only other players to accomplish the feat.

The Argos' batting lineup was productive with six players batting above .400 in the two games combined including four players above .500. Nicole Mergen is the reigning GSC Freshman of the Week and went 4-6 with a run, a home run, and an RBI.

Erin Moon continued her success at the plate with a 3-5 with a run, a double, an RBI, and another sacrifice hit to continue leading the team. Gianna Guerriero also batted .500, going 4-8 with 2 runs, a double, and two RBI. She also stole two more bases to bring her conference leading total to 24 for 24, still perfect at the halfway point of the season.

Haley Guffey earned her tenth win of the season in the 12-7 win. The Chargers were able to get some late earned runs in the back half of game one, but Guffey also added five strikeouts and forced UAH to leave seven runners on base in the win.

Game 1: UWF 12, UAH 7

The Argos jumped on top in the first inning with an Erin Moon RBI double to score Guerriero. UAH tied it in the bottom of the second on a sac bunt turned fielding error that scored one.

The Argos jumped ahead in the third and never looked back, starting with a sacrifice fly out from Hannah Harper to score Angelia Discenza. Baughan hit the first of her three home runs to bring in Emma Brice, followed by Mergen's solo home run.

UWF was now up 5-1, but UAH responded with an RBI single to bring it within three at 5-2. UWF picked right up with its explosive offense, starting with a Moon RBI bunt. Brice followed with an RBI double, and Baughan homered for a second time shortly after. UAH entered the fifth inning down 10-2, but managed to stave off the run-rule with a solo home run in the fifth.

In the sixth, Harper scored Brianna Jennings with an RBI single and Baughan hit her third home run to complete her day and put UWF up 12-3. UAH once again pushed the game to another inning, avoiding the run rule with an RBI double, a single and a score on a throwing error, and a 2-RBI double. The Argos didn't add any runs in the seventh, and the Chargers went down in order in the bottom of the final inning to give game one to the Argos 12-7.

Game 2: UWF 3, UAH 11 in five innings

Hannah Harper (7-2) started in the circle for the Argos and began the first inning with a couple of strikeouts. UWF took the first lead on a Gianna Guerriero RBI double to score Baughan and Bella Holiday. UAH took the lead in the second on a grand slam.

In the fourth, Discenza reached on a fielder's choice allowing Nevaeh Hayes to score unearned. The score was 3-4 UAH entering the bottom of the inning, but the game got away from the Argos when a throwing error allowed a score from third, a bases loaded walk scored another, and then a 3-RBI triple cleared most of the bases.

UWF entered the fifth down 3-9. UAH put multiple runners on and scored a runner on a wild pitch. An RBI single in the bottom of the fifth triggered the 3-11 run rule.
