Argos Complete Late Comeback to Take Series Over Alabama-Huntsville

UWF bats score seven runs in the seventh inning, hold off Chargers for 9-8 win.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Down 5-2 entering the seventh inning, UWF Softball (18-8, 11-4) showed no panic and relied on its power hitting to put up seven runs in the final inning and secure a 9-8 victory over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.

UWF was down 2-5 entering the seventh but recorded seven runs on six hits in the top of the final inning to go ahead. UAH mounted a comeback of their own with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the seven runs from the Argos were one too many.

The win helps the Argos keep their tie for first place in the Gulf South Conference with Mississippi College and AUM. UWF has now won two-straight series against the Chargers and are 4-2 in the past two seasons.

Erin Moon continues to be an RBI machine, and one of UWF's most consistent bats. Today against UAH, the senior went 3-3 with a run and three RBI. She also recorded her fifth sacrifice flyout of the season, which also leads the Argos.

Nicole Mergen hit her eighth home run of the season on her way to going 2-4 with a run and two RBI. She is now tied for second in the conference and leads the Argos.

Emma Brice also went deep in the top of the seventh for her third home run of the season. Her final stat line Sunday included a 2-4 mark at the plate, two runs, and two RBI.

Haley Guffey earned her eleventh win of the season and Hannah Harper picked up her first save of the year. The Chargers did manage six earned runs but the tandem combined with the UWF fielders forced UAH to strand nine runners in the game.

The first inning was quiet with UWF leaving one on and the Chargers going down on a strikeout and a double play.

Mergen broke the silence in the second with an RBI single to score Brice. UAH was held scoreless another inning until they jumped out to a 1-3 lead in the third off multiple RBI singles. Their lead jumped to 1-5 after a 2-RBI home run in the fourth.

Moon cut into the deficit in the fifth when she recorded her RBI sacrifice flyout. Both teams were stifled until the seventh, when it all changed for the Argos. Moon once again was the catalyst, putting up the first two runs of the inning on a 2-RBI single to score Gianna Guerriero and Bella Holliday. Harper scored Moon and Angelia Discenza with another RBI single. Brice hit her 2-RBI bomb to score Harper, and Mergen hit her solo blast to finish off the inning at 9-5 UWF.

UAH wasn't done, reaching multiple runners and scoring one on a fielder's choice and an error. A sacrifice flyout also brought in a run, but the second out as well. An RBI single brought the score to 9-8 with UAH still having the bases loaded. A line drive to Mergen at third base allowed her to tag the base for an unassisted out, securing the win and the series for the Argos in a close comeback effort.
