Argos Hold Off Canes in 3-2 Victory

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team broke the three-game losing streak over Georgia Southwestern after grabbing a 3-2 home victory Tuesday night.

The Argos did not record a hit until the sixth inning, yet came out on top.

UWF got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth. Despite tallying no hits at the time, the Argos loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. Dom Presto stepped up to the plate and grabbed an RBI off a walk to send the first run in.

The Canes responded with a one run on two hits frame in the sixth.

UWF quickly regained the lead in their next offensive appearance. The Argos sent two runs home off three hits – totaling their hits for the game. Cade Easterbrook led of the inning with a double. Brett Rowell followed with a hit by pitch to put himself at first. Redshirt sophomore, Alex Urias, hit a solid outfield single that sent Easterbrook home and put Rowell in scoring position. On two outs, Jake Cooper capped the scoring with an RBI outfield single. The hit sent a second run home but the Canes caught Urias running from second to third, preventing 4-1 score.

The Argos began the ninth inning rocky, putting two runners on base off an error and a walk. UWF recorded another error that allowed the Canes to put the score at a one-run difference. With loaded bases and one out, the Argos put in their fourth and final pitcher. Currently playing DH, Brantley Willis saw himself making his way to the mound.

Willis recently grabbed a save in UWF's latest conference series over Alabama Huntsville (March 14).

The transfer junior opened his Tuesday night appearance with a strikeout and a fly out to end the game and uplift UWF to their 16th win.

Blake Thomas got his first win on the mound after 0.1 innings pitched. Thomas entered halfway through the top of the sixth at a one-all score.

All relieving pitchers let up zero runs in the final three innings.

Argos and Canes will finish the midweek series tomorrow, March 19 at 3:00 p.m. CT at Jim Spooner Field.
