BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference announced its weekly tennis awards today for performances in matches from March 17-23. Graduate student
Miguel Cabrera won his first career GSC Player of the Week award for his performance in helping the top-ranked Argos to three wins over nationally ranked squads and improve to 16-1 and 5-1 in GSC play.
Ranked No. 12 in the ITA DII National Singles Rankings, Cabrera had a 4-2 overall week, including a 3-0 slate in singles. Starting the week with a GSC contest at No. 25 Lee, Cabrera and doubles partner
Albin Ekenros got the match started with a 6-3 win in doubles. Cabrera then put the Argos up 3-0 on the way to a 7-0 sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 win in singles. The next day at No. 18 North Georgia, after the hosts took doubles, the grad transfer from UT Arlington clinched the 5-2 win over the Nighthawks by taking a tough three-set battle 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. He finished the week at home against No. 33 Columbus State, in which he and the team rebounded again from a doubles loss, as he clinched another 5-2 win with a 7-5, 6-2 win in singles.
Cabrera and the Argos stay home this weekend for their next contest, a GSC matchup with Mississippi College. It's a rematch from last year when the Choctaws knocked off UWF in the regular season and GSC Semifinals, and a battle between the second- and third-seeded teams in the conference standings, respectively, behind Valdosta State.
