PENSACOLA, Fla. – The first meeting in program history with #12 Trevecca Nazarene (14-6, 5-6) could not have gone much better for West Florida Softball (16-6, 9-2) as the Argos took both games of a Friday header against the GSC newcomer.
The Argos took game one 2-0 in a shutout win and run-ruled the Trojans 10-2 in six innings in game two. They are now on a 10-game win streak, the longest active streak in the Gulf South Conference.
Gianna Guerriero also celebrated her senior day and stole two more bases in her GSC-leading total of 22.
Haley Guffey started in the game one shutout and is now 9-3 on the season and tied for first place in the GSC in wins. With her updated statistics, she is now also the GSC leader in ERA (1.55) and shutouts (4). Hanah Harper also earned win no. 7 in the game two run-rule.
Nicole Mergen had a huge outing at the plate today, batting 4-5 (.800) with two runs and two home runs to go along with four RBI. The freshman is now the team leader in home runs with six on the year.
Erin Moon went a combined 4-7 (.571) with two runs, a triple, and three RBI in the winning effort. Moon now leads the team with 21 RBI on the year.
UWF 2, TNU 0
Guffey earned her highest strikeout total of the season with six K's in game one on her way to the shutout.
The Argos went ahead 1-0 in the first off Moon's triple and a score on a wild pitch. The next five innings were uneventful as Guffey and Trevecca Nazarene pitcher Ashlan Sensing traded strikeouts to their opposing batting lineups.
Both teams stranded three runners the whole game, but UWF was finally able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth off another
Angelia Discenza triple and a Moon RBI groundout. The Trojans got one on in the seventh, but a fly out ended the game to secure the shutout win.
UWF 10, TNU 2 / six innings
Despite having 10 hits in the game, the Trojans were held to just two runs by
Hannah Harper and the UWF defense capitalizing on opportune outs at crucial moments. The Argos turned two double plays in the game with the bases loaded to secure scoreless frames two times.
UWF jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning thanks to another Moon RBI single and some crafty base running that allowed Guerriero and Discenza to score. Harper scored Moon on an RBI single and
Nicole Mergen cleared the bases with her first home run of the game.
Trevecca responded in the third inning with several singles and an RBI groundout to bring the game back to 5-2. Mergen scored
Olivia Ryan on an RBI single in the bottom of the third to push it back to 6-2 Argos.
Mergen again continued her dominant performance at the plate with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth. The Argos were able to trigger the run-rule after a Guerriero RBI single scored
Bella Holliday, a Moon fielder's choice allowed Cornelius to score, and an RBI double from
Hannah Harper provided the last run in the 10-2 six inning run-rule.
