PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF Softball (27-12, 18-8) is leaving the Fork with a win and a loss against the West Alabama Tigers (26-15, 15-11) after an uncharacteristic doubleheader ended in a 1-1 split.
The Argos took game one to extras and came away with a thrilling 1-0 win after
Hannah Harper drove in
Angelia Discenza on a walk-off sacrifice fly. This was the only run of the day for the Argos, whose lineup was stifled at times and forced to strand many runners throughout the two games. In total, 15 runners were left on in the two combined games, and the Argos were shut out for the first time this season in their game two 0-6 loss.
The Argos are second in the GSC as of Saturday, with Mississippi College and Valdosta state losing their
weekend series. The Argos have already clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament in Oxford during the first week of May, but still have a regular season title at stake and tournament seeding to play for.
The pitching of
Haley Guffey (17-6) was another bright spot, as the junior recorded her GSC-leading eighth shutout of the season in the game one win and set a new season-high with nine strikeouts against the Tigers. Her season ERA improves to 2.08, still sixth in the conference.
Erin Moon also celebrated her senior day Saturday, and had a few big moments including a couple hits, a sacrifice, and a huge pickoff at second base while playing catcher in game one.
Game 1: UWF 1, UWA 0
The first three innings went by quickly, with West Alabama's Madison Wright and Guffey trading strikeouts while both defenses locked up. Entering the bottom of the fourth tied at 0 - 0, Moon and Harper both singled.
Brett Watson came in to pinch run for Moon, and the tandem were able to steal third and second. A strikeout stranded them both, keeping the score at 0-0.
In the fifth,
Nevaeh Hayes doubled down the right field line, but the Argos went down in order after that. Two more runners were left on in the next two innings, but Guffey and the Argos also held the Tigers to force extras.
In the top of the eighth, Guffey broke her season high in strikeouts recording two more K's to bring her total to nine. The ninth strikeout shutout the Tigers for the last inning of the game, as Discenza doubled in the bottom of the inning, and Moon's sacrifice bunt brought her to third. Harper followed with a walk-off RBI sacrifice flyout, giving the Argos a tough-fought 1-0 win in extras.
Game 2: UWF 0, UWA 6
Game two wasted no time for a score, as West Alabama jumped on the board first with an RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, Moon hit another single and worked her way to third. Harper walked and UWF had runners on the corners, but a lineout ended the frame.
UWA struck again on a solo home run in the third inning, bringing it to 2-0 Tigers. The Argos had another chance in the fourth to tie with runners on first and second with two outs but got caught on another strikeout.
The same thing happened in the fifth, as an error allowed
Gianna Guerriero to get on base and
Bella Holliday singled. Two straight pop ups forced another inning with two stranded runners.
It was still 2-0 UWA entering the seventh, but the Tigers ran away with the game on a few singles, two walks, and a batter hit by a pitch. After the damage was done, UWA led 0-6. The Argos went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, and were shut out for the first time in 2025.
