Argos, Choctaws Trade Blowout Wins In Friday Twinbill

13 hits for Argos in game one win, errors give MC win in game two

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Both the West Florida Argonauts (28-14, 19-10) and Mississippi College Choctaws (31-14, 19-10) are leaving the UWF Softball Complex with resounding wins after each team exploded offensively in a high-scoring Friday doubleheader.

The Argos took game one with a 10-2 five inning run rule. UWF scored nine of their runs in the first two innings, driving 13 hits and seeing hits from eight of their nine members of their lineup. In game two, errors doomed the Argos as they tied their season high with five.

Haley Guffey earned win no. 18 in the effort, allowing the two earned runs and just four hits in five innings of work. Her season ERA is now 2.10.

Gianna Guerriero was back to her productive ways after a quiet weekend against West Alabama. Against the Choctaws Friday, Guerriero went 4-6 with three runs and a double.

Emma Brice also had a solid Friday at the plate, also going 4-6 with a double and an RBI. Erin Moon continues her team lead in RBI with two more today to go along with three hits and a run.

Jessie Baughan tied Nicole Mergen for the team lead in home runs (8) with a three-run blast to left center in game one.

Game 1: UWF 10, MC 2

Guerriero started things off with a lead-off single to get things going. She later scored off a Moon single. Moon and Angelia Discenza were scored by Hannah Harper on an RBI and a throwing error from first base. After one, the Argos were up 3-0. MC responded with an RBI single in the top of the second, but the second inning was all UWF from then on.

Guerriero singled once again on a bunt, and advanced to second where she was initially ruled out, but official review ruled fielder obstruction and allowed her to stay. The play allowed Kyndal Cornelius to score. Nevaeh Hayes completed another complicated RBI single bunt, scoring Guerriero for the secone time. Harper singled through the left side scoring Discenza, and Baughan's home run brought Hayes and Harper back to the dugout. When the dust settled, the Argos were up 9-1 entering the third.

Both teams were kept in check in the third, and Mississipi College added one run in the fourth on a wild pitch. The Argos took the run back with a Brice RBI double scoring Bella Holliday. UWF took the Choctaws down in order in the fifth to trigger the run-rule win, 10-2.

Game 2: UWF 1, MC 9

The script flipped for both teams in game two, as it was the Choctaws with a sizeable lead after two innings. Both teams went down in order to begin the game, then the errors began for the Argos.

One error allowed a runner on, and then a stolen base allowed enough chaos on the base paths to let another runner score on the throw. An RBI single to left field brought in another, and a single combined with a throwing error on the next play scored two more. A third error allowed a runner to reach first and scored another.

After allowing a five-run inning, the Argos went 1-2-3 for the next two innings, and MC scored another on a sacrifice flyout. UWF got on the board in the fourth with an RBI single from Moon to score Guerriero for the third time today.

MC blanked the Argos for the rest of the game and added runs on a solo home run in the sixth and a pair of RBI singles in the seventh. The Choctaws defeated the Argos 9-1 to even up the series.
