BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2025 All-GSC selections for women's tennis on Wednesday night, and four UWF players placed on the Second Team, the most all-conference winners of any team. The three who played for the Argos last season also earned all-conference votes then, two of them placing for the third time in their careers, and the fourth earned First Team All-Conference last season at her previous school.
Carlota Verdu takes home All-GSC honors for the third time in her career, and Second Team for the second time. The junior from Barcelona, Spain, has held down the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles. She and partner
Sandra Recuenco, currently ranked No. 6 in the ITA DII National Doubles Rankings, are 13-6 at the top spot, including wins of 7-6 (7-3) over No. 15 Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga of No. 2 Midwestern State, 7-5 over No. 10 Nikoline Gullacksen and Mariana Ramirez of No. 10 Columbus State and 6-4 over No. 1 Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba of No. 8 West Alabama. Verdu also is 8-12 in singles play, ranking No. 22 in the ITA.
Aline Midori Da Silva, also placing on the team for a third time and Second Team for the second, has had a great year, ranking No. 64 in singles. The junior from Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, is 16-5 in singles and 5-2 in GSC play, while earning wins against No. 2 MSU over the then-No. 8 player in the country, No. 5 North Georgia, No. 8 UWA, No. 10 CSU, No. 11 Lee, No. 16 Florida Southern, No. 29 Saint Leo and DI Jacksonville State and New Orleans. She and partner
Guadalupe Martinez are 14-3 in doubles, including 6-1 in GSC play, on courts two and three.
Recuenco earned All-GSC honors in her first season at UWF after earning First Team All-SSAC honors at Middle Georgia State last year. The junior from Valencia, Spain, went 14-6 in doubles at the top spot, with Verdu as her partner in every match but one, a win over Montevallo with
Giuliana Sacco. On top of her accomplishments in the doubles category to rank No. 6 there with Verdu, she is 13-8 in singles on courts one and two, where she is 3-0 against the DI opponents of South Alabama, JSU and UNO, while also earning wins against No. 5 UNG, No. 14 Auburn Montgomery, No. 16 FSC, No. 25 UT Tyler and No. 35 Southern Arkansas.
Martinez placed on the All-GSC Second Team for a second straight season. The junior from Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, has had another stellar year. In addition to her accomplishments in doubles with Midori Da Silva, she is 50th in the ITA DII Singles Rankings. She is 18-3 there, including a perfect 8-0 mark in GSC play, while notching wins in matches against No. 2 MSU, No. 5 UNG, No. 8 UWA, No. 10 CSU, No. 11 Lee, No. 14 AUM, No. 16 FSC, No. 18 Mississippi College, No. 25 UT Tyler, No. 29 SLU and No. 35 SAU. Her only losses are against two DI schools and No. 3 Nova Southeastern.
The Argos, ranked No. 9 in the nation and No. 6 in the most recent NCAA DII South Region rankings, are seeded No. 5 in the GSC and take on the No. 4-seed AUM tomorrow at 10 am in the GSC Quarterfinals.
