OXFORD, Ala. – Jessie Baughan is the hero of West Florida's first day at the Gulf South Conference Tournament, delivering the Argos a 3-2 win over 7-seed Montevallo with a walk-off 2-RBI triple.
UWF (34-15, 22-11) wins the first round of the GSC Tournament for the second straight year and will now advance to the winner's bracket to take on Mississippi College at 3:30 PM CST tomorrow.
UWF came from behind twice in the game and overcame five total errors. Each time they were able to rebound from their errors, forcing the Falcons to strand six total base runners in the game and turning a double play in the third inning.
Newly-crowned GSC Co-Player of the Year
Gianna Guerriero went 3-3 at the plate and added a run. She is 13-19 in her last six games combined for a .684 average.
Hannah Harper (12-6) and
Haley Guffey (22-7) contributed in massive ways to the win, with Guffey pitching the first four innings and not allowing an earned run, and Harper pitching the last three and earning the win. Harper allowed just one hit in the three innings pitched. The tandem earned first and Second Team All-Conference honors earlier in the day.
Erin Moon continues to churn out RBI for the Argos, scoring Guerriero on an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game up. She also earned Second Team All-GSC honors at catcher.
UWF 3, Montevallo 2
The Falcons began the game getting two singles with two outs but stranding both on a fielder's choice. Guerriero singled in the bottom of the inning but was caught stealing and soon after the Falcons turned a double play against Discenza and Moon.
In the second, a single and a fielding error allowed a score from second. The Argos earned a groundout to clear a walked batter but then went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams went in order in the third and the Falcons again in the fourth. UWF managed two singles in the fourth but stranded them once again. Guerriero's second single allowed for Moon's RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Harper subbed in for Guffey in the fifth, but two straight errors allowed for two runners on base. A wild play involving a lineout and an attempted double play at second followed by a throwing error at second and another throwing error at first allowed an unearned run to score, giving the Falcons the 2-1 lead.
The Argos grounded into a double play in the bottom of the inning and took the Falcons down in order in the top of the sixth. UWF had a great chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff hit from
Olivia Keith as a pinch hitter and Guerriero's third hit. A swinging strikeout and two fly-outs followed, stranding two more for UWF and bringing them to their final outs.
Montevallo again threatened in the seventh with a single and a walk with two outs. Harper secured the third out and sent the Argos back to the plate for one more try. Harper was walked on the next at bat, and a throwing error put
Emma Brice on at second and advanced pinch runner
Brianna Jennings to third. Baughan stepped up to the plate and ripped of six-straight foul balls before launching a triple to right center and scoring Harper and Jennings to give the Argos the 3-2 walk-off win.
