Late Errors Hurt Argos Against Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Argos dropped a pair of games on Saturday to Lee falling in the first game 8-7 and the second game 3-2.

UWF held a 6-1 advantage in the first game of the doubleheader through seven innings, but Lee scored seven runs in the final three innings, including two runs in the bottom of the ninth to sneak away with the win.

In the final inning a throwing error by UWF on a sacrifice bunt allowed one run to score for the Flames and put runners on second and third. Lee's catcher Brock Sisson then singled with two outs to score two runs.

The Argos managed 10 hits with four of those hits coming from Ben Maskin who went 4-for-5 from the plate. Maskin's RBI single in the first inning gave UWF a 2-0 lead at the time.

UWF added four runs in the fourth inning and another in the eighth inning. The team held a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Jacob Heath earned the start for the Argos. Grant Adams, Chase Stanhope and Brantley Willis all saw time on the mound in relief.

The second game of the doubleheader featured much less offense than the first game and ended in similar fashion to the first game of the day with a walk off run scored by Lee. The scheduled seven-inning contest had to go nine innings to decide the winner.

UWF took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Maskin's two RBI single to center field scored Brantley Willis and Jadon Fryman.

Lee answered with a run in the fourth to tie the game and then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth when a pitch got away from Willis allowing the Flames to beat and break up the throw to home plate.

The Argos had just four hits in the game and struck out 10 times.

Kade Manderscheid was the team's starting pitcher and went eight innings. He struck out five while limiting Lee to just two runs.

UWF will play its next five games at home starting with two non-conference games against Columbus State on Tuesday and Wednesday. The team will then host West Alabama on Friday and Saturday for the regular three-game conference series.
