CLEVELAND, Tenn. – UWF Softball (26-11, 17-7) is leaving the Volunteer State with a 2-1 series win over the Lee Flames (20-19, 7-16), clinching a spot in the GSC Tournament in the process.
The Argos were down 1-6 in game one of the Saturday doubleheader but turned in a five-run third inning to come back and win the game 11-7.
Erin Moon provided late-game heroics in game two, taking the Argos from being down five runs to bringing them within one with the swing of a bat. Her grand slam made it 7-8 Lee, but the Flames secured the final strikeout to prevent the sweep. Overall, Moon went 4-7 with two runs, four RBI, and a double added to the grand slam. It was also her first home run of the season.
Emma Brice also recorded a solid day of production, batting 4-7 with three runs a double, and a home run in the two games Saturday, Including a 2-Rbi double to tie UWF in game one in their comeback.
The extra-base hits came flowing back for the Argos this weekend after being stifled a weekend ago. Today, the Argos lineup recorded 10 extra base hits between the two games including four home runs from Moon, Brice,
Angelia Discenza, and
Hannah Harper. Harper hit her second of the weekend in game two.
Game 1: UWF 11, LEE 7
UWF went up 1-0 in the first inning off a throwing error allowing Discenza to score. The next two innings were all Flames, as Lee managed to get a couple aboard ans teal home and then get an RBI single to go up 2-1. In the second, UWF errors allowed base runners on. An RBI double and multiple RBI singles drove the score up 1-6.
The Argos went to work in the third, storming right back from a five-run deficit to tie the game at 6-6. It started with
Bella Holliday and
Nevaeh Hayes getting on base, and Hayes scoring on a wild pitch.
Gianna Guerriero hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Holliday. Discenza hit a solo home run, and then Brice scored
Brett Watson and Moon on an RBI double.
Tied 6-6, Lee took the lead once again on a solo home run to left field. Down 6-7, UWF took control and never relinquished it. In the fifth,
Nicole Mergen scored
Jessie Baughan on an RBI single, followed by a Hayes RBI triple. Holliday hit an RBI single to the shortstop to score Hayes.
Up 9-7 in the sixth, Brice scored
Brianna Jennings on an RBI single and Baughan reached on a fielder's choice scoring Brice.
Entering the seventh up 11-7, UWF secured the final three outs to clinch the series and the comeback win.
Game 2: UWF 7, LEE 8
Game two had almost the same recipe but yielded different results. Brice opened things up with her solo home run in the second inning, but then it was all Lee for innings two through five. An RBI double in the second tied it up at 1-1. In the third, the Flames doubled to left center to drive in a run, and then hit a 2-RBI home run.
In the fourth, the Flames added an RBI triple and an RBI double. They ended the scoring streak in the fifth inning with a solo home run. UWF left six total runners on base in the game and managed to close the gap in the sixth on harper's solo home run to right field and Mergen's groundout RBI scoring Brice.
Entering the seventh, UWF was down 3-8 after a Lee sacrifice RBI flyout. A couple hits and a walk loaded the bases, and Moon stepped up huge with her grand slam. The Argos managed to get Baughan aboard on a fielding error and
Brett Watson pinch ran for her. A wild pitch moved her to second as the tying run, but a strikeout ended the close comeback effort falling in favor of the Flames this time.
