ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –
Millie Thompson tied the low single round score of the tournament with a three-under in her final round at the World Golf Invitational to finish tied for third place in the first tournament of the spring championship season. As a team the Argos had a slow start to the tournament and finished in 14
th place with a team score of 922 (+58).
In the first tournament back since Oct. 28 the UWF women's golf team needed some time to shake off the rust that built between the fall and spring competition seasons. The first two rounds set the Argos back in the standings with a +25 in round one and +21 in round two, but the team responded in Tuesday's final round with a 300 (+12).
Thompson led the way for UWF with a three-under, 69 on Tuesday. The senior moved up 10 places in the individual standings with her low final round. Thompson had come into the final day at +4 by shooting 74-74 (+2) on day one. She posted six birdies in round three and for the tournament was ranked tied for second overall out of 87 players with 11 total birdies.
Samantha Schultz had a consistent tournament, going 75-75-74 to finish tied for 16
th place overall. Schultz also was one of top players in the birdies category with nine. That tied her for eighth amongst the field.
"It's definitely been a good baseline to see how much improvement we need to make in the next two months so we can be ready for golf conference," said head coach
Kristen Dorsey.
The Argos will be at the Lady Moc Classic on Feb. 23 and 24 for their next tournament which will take place at Grasslands Country Club in Lakeland, Fla.
