UWF Splits Conference Opener with Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 8 University of West Florida baseball team opened the conference slate in Montevallo with a split day, dropping game one and coming back to take game two in a 6-4 victory.

GAME 1
Montevallo took the early lead in game one, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. Christian Pencek started on the mound for the Argos and pushed through 4.2 innings before Braden Rapp came in to replace him. The top of the sixth saw a scoring opportunity for the Argos, but unfortunately did not pan out. Montevallo finished it with 9 runs and Zach Wyatt earning the win.

GAME 2
West Florida came back ready for game two, putting up one run to start things off. Gustavo Mendez sent a single to center field to drive in Trent Kelly. The Falcons followed shortly after with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second. A two-out single by Kelly scored William Lybrook to close the gap by one run in the top of the fourth.

Elijah Roberts pitched into the fifth inning for the Argos and struck out two. Eli Lamb came in relief to earn the win after pitching 1.2 innings. West Florida was able to finish with the win after putting up four runs in the top of the seventh. Alex Urias started it off with a double down the right field line and Lybrook followed it up with a single. Back-to-back singles from Andrew Walton and Zack DeJesus scored Urias and Greg Pettay to tie up the game at 4-4. Zack Stokes knocked a two-RBI double to left center to secure the win and split the day with the Falcons.

"Long day for us offensively, but we finally broke through in the final inning of the day to even the series," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Several big hits in the innings and none bigger than Stokes go-ahead two-run double. I think we learned some valuable lessons as a team today and now we need to use the momentum tomorrow to win the series."

Micky Scheetz finished out the game for West Florida and earned his third save of the season.

UWF will finish the series against Montevallo on Saturday at 12 p.m.
