MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 8 University of West Florida baseball team finished out the opening weekend of the conference slate with a 2-0 victory over Montevallo to take the series for the Argos.
Tucker Ricks started on the mound for UWF and threw six innings with no runs scored to secure his first college win on the mound.
Tucker Jackson and
Micky Scheetz finished out the job without any runs allowed. Scheetz continues his work with his fourth save on the season after throwing the final two innings.
Gustavo Mendez had a good day at the plate for the Argos, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. West Florida saw their runs scored in the top of the fourth and eighth, both on sacrifice flies. In the top of the fourth, the Argos knocked three singles to get bases loaded before
Jake Cooper lined out to right field, but scored Mendez. A single by Mendez started off the eighth and was followed by a throwing error by the Falcons that put
Tanner Taylor on first, and pinch-runner
Jay Henderson on third.
Alex Urias sent a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Henderson as the final run for the Argos.
"Pitching and defense ruled the day, and
Tucker Ricks had a great strong six innings for his first college win," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "
Tucker Jackson for one and Scheetz to finish the last two for the save. We turned our first two double-plays of the year, we did leave a lot of runners on, but proud of the way they responded to win the series."
UWF will return home for their series against Christian Brothers, starting with a single game on Friday, February 20 and a doubleheader on Saturday.
