Argos take road victory over Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The No. 11 University of West Florida baseball team took their first win on the road to start the weekend series against Rollins, on Friday afternoon with a 5-4 victory.

Colton Dorsey took the mound for the Argos to start it off with three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the first. Rollins came back to be the first on the board with a run scored in each of the second and third innings, taking the early lead over the Argos.

The Argos put their number up in the top of the fourth with a two-out single from freshman Tyler Brobst that brought in Zack Stokes. The top of the fifth saw the tying run for West Florida as Tanner Taylor led the inning with a double down the left field line. Trent Kelly laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Taylor even further into scoring position. Alex Urias drove him in with a single through the right side that put the game at 2-2.

Dorsey stayed strong for the Argos, ending his time in the fifth inning with 6 strikeouts. Christian Pencek finished the fifth out with a strikeout and gave up only one hit in the sixth.

West Florida took the lead in the top of the seventh after a sacrifice fly brought home William Lybrook. The scoring did not stop there as the Argos put up two more runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. Rollins knocked a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, making it a one-run game, but the Argos stayed true and finished with a victory. Micky Scheetz earned a save for his finish, while Pencek earned his first win as an Argo.

"It was another good comeback victory and first one on the road," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "We kept the game close and started executing our offense to take the lead. Dorsey gave us another solid start, and other than the two-run homerun, our bullpen finished the job. It was a very good one-run victory."

West Florida returns tomorrow, February 7, for game two against Rollins at 12:00 PM CT.
