PENSACOLA, Fla. — West Florida secured a 6–4 victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville at Jim Spooner Field on Friday. This win earned
Mike Jeffcoat the title of All Time Winningest Coach in Program History with 689 wins.
The Chargers took an early lead in the first inning with a double down the right field line. It was followed with a single to left field that brought in the second run to end the inning ahead 2-0.
West Florida responded in the third inning.
Greg Pettay singled to center field and then stole second. A bunt single by
Alex Urias resulted in a throwing error, allowing Pettay to score and
Zack Stokes, who had walked, to advance to third.
Gustavo Mendez grounded out to second base, bringing home Stokes.
Tyler Brobst added a double to right center, driving in Urias. The Argonauts took the lead 3–2 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, the Chargers tied the game. A throwing error followed by a sacrifice fly brought in another run for the Chargers. The score was locked at 3–3 through four innings. UAH regained the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI double.
West Florida reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning. Urias singled and moved to second on a groundout. Brobst and
William Lybrook reached base, setting the stage for
Gann Nobles, who singled up the middle, driving in two runs and giving the Argonauts a 5–4 lead through seven innings. In the eighth inning, Stokes doubled and was driven home by an RBI single from Urias, extending the lead to 6–4.
Garrett Brewer started the game for West Florida, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out two batters.
Braden Rapp relieved Brewer and threw 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and one earned run, striking out three and walking two.
Blake Thomas contributed with 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four and not allowing a single hit. Closing the game,
Micky Scheetz pitched the ninth inning, allowing one hit and one walk, while securing the save.
The Argonauts will finish the series against the Chargers with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Jim Spooner Field.
