Argos Sweep Warhawks with Doubleheader Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — West Florida (26-6, 16-5) secured a decisive 11-1 victory over Auburn University at Montgomery (8-24, 4-16) on Saturday at the AUM Baseball Complex in the first game of a doubleheader, and later narrowly defeated them again with a final score of 4–3 in the second game.

The Argos now sit at 26-6 overall and 16-5 in the Gulf South Conference in 2026, tying them for first place in the GSC.

**Game 1 Overview:**  
The game featured a strong performance by West Florida, highlighted by five doubles and a home run. The action began with Zack Stokes doubling to center field, setting the stage for West Florida's offense. Gustavo Mendez scored on a single by William Lybrook, giving West Florida a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

In the third, a series of plays extended West Florida's lead. Stokes advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a double by Trent Kelly. Mendez also crossed the plate due to a balk, followed by Kelly scoring on another single from Lybrook. By the end of the third inning, West Florida led 4-0.

West Florida continued to build its lead in the fourth inning. Peyton Martin homered to left field, followed by Stokes doubling and scoring on a Mendez double. AUM managed to score a run, but West Florida maintained a 6-1 lead.

The fifth inning saw West Florida further increasing its advantage. Tyler Brobst and Greg Pettay both singled, and Martin's double brought in two runs. Stokes contributed with an RBI single, and an additional run scored on a groundout by Jake Cooper, closing the inning at 10-1.

In the seventh, West Florida added one more run. Hudson Spencer, pinch hitting for Cooper, reached third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly. Tucker Ricks pitched seven strong innings, allowing only three hits and striking out seven to secure the victory. The final score was West Florida 11, AUM 1.

Ricks delivered a complete game, pitching 7 innings while allowing just one earned run on three hits. He struck out seven batters and walked only one, maintaining a WHIP of 0.57. Ricks threw 90 pitches, 62 of which were strikes, and also picked off a runner, contributing to his fifth win of the season. His performance included a critical stretch where he retired multiple batters in succession and limited the opposition to just one double.

Stokes showcased his offensive skills by collecting three hits, including two doubles, and scoring two runs. Martin contributed significantly with two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs while crossing the plate twice. Mendez added to the scoring effort with a hit, a double, one RBI, and two runs scored.

**Game 2 Overview:**  
In the second game, West Florida narrowly defeated Auburn University at Montgomery with a final score of 4–3. Zack Stokes gave West Florida an early lead with a solo homer to left field in the first inning. Auburn University at Montgomery was held scoreless, leaving the visitors ahead 1–0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, the Warhawks took advantage of a fielding error, scoring two runs to take a 2–1 lead. West Florida was unable to score despite getting two players on base. West Florida tied the game in the third inning when William Lybrook singled to right field, driving in Greg Pettay. The score was even at 2–2 after three innings.

West Florida regained the lead in the fifth inning. Gustavo Mendez singled through the left side, followed by a triple from Kelly, which brought Mendez home, making the score 3–2 for the visitors. Auburn University at Montgomery tied it again in the sixth inning with an unearned run, bringing the score to 3–3.

In the seventh inning, West Florida pulled ahead once more. Stokes walked and later scored on a single by Mendez, putting the visitors up 4–3. The Warhawks were unable to score in their half of the inning, concluding the game with West Florida securing a 4–3 victory.

Elijah Roberts started the game, pitching 4 2/3 innings while allowing four hits and two runs. He recorded three strikeouts and issued two walks over 64 pitches, achieving a strike-to-pitch ratio of 65.6%. Blake Thomas contributed a brief but effective relief appearance, pitching 1/3 inning without allowing a hit or run and executing a pickoff. Eli Lamb allowed one run on one hit in 2/3 inning pitched, striking out one batter. Micky Scheetz closed the game with 1 1/3 innings, surrendering two hits and one walk but keeping the opposition scoreless, adding a pickoff to his performance.

Stokes hit a home run and recorded two runs, leading the offense with a 1.833 OPS. Mendez collected two hits and drove in one run, contributing to a solid batting performance. Kelly added a triple and an RBI, demonstrating effective situational hitting.
