CLINTON, Miss. — UWF (31-13, 17-12 GSC) faced a challenging doubleheader against Mississippi College (26-19, 19-10 GSC), resulting in a defeat in the first game, 10–7, followed by a commanding 13-6 victory in the second game.
In Game 1, the Argos produced an impressive 16 hits but couldn't overcome a seven-run surge from the Choctaws in the fourth inning. UWF opened the scoring in the second inning when
Peyton Martin doubled, and
Tanner Taylor followed with an RBI double to right center, bringing Martin home. Mississippi College quickly responded with a home run tying the game at 1–1 through two innings.
UWF managed to add another run in the fourth inning as
Alex Urias singled to right center, allowing Taylor to score. However, the Choctaws took control with their seven-run inning, leading 8–2 after four innings. The Argos narrowed the gap in the fifth inning with a run from
Tyler Brobst on
Gann Nobles' groundout and an RBI single from
Peyton Martin, bringing
William Lybrook home. Urias and
Zack Stokes each contributed RBIs, reducing the score to 9–6 after five innings.
Trent Kelly's score in the sixth made it 9–7, but that would be the last run for UWF in their comeback effort.
Lybrook collected three hits in the game, while Taylor scored two runs and recorded three hits, including a double. Martin also crossed the plate twice and added a double among his two hits, with Urias driving in two runs.
Tucker Ricks started for West Florida, pitching three innings and allowing six earned runs on four hits, with four walks and a home run.
In Game 2, the Argonauts bounced back with a strong performance, securing a 13-6 victory. UWF took an early lead in the first inning, scoring four runs thanks to
Zack Stokes' double down the left-field line, a hit-by-pitch for Jed Jones, and RBI walks to
Greg Pettay and
Hudson Spencer, capped off by an RBI single from
Alex Urias. By the end of the inning, the Argos led 4-0.
The third inning saw
Tanner Taylor single and advance to second on a wild pitch. Pettay then doubled to drive in Taylor, increasing the lead to 5-1 despite MC responding with a run. The Choctaws added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth with a solo homer, closing the gap to 5-3.
UWF widened their advantage in the sixth inning, scoring five runs with Pettay scoring on a single by
Trent Kelly, followed by three runs from subsequent errors. Taylor's double brought home
William Lybrook to cap the scoring for that inning, leading 10-3. In the seventh inning, Pettay scored on an error after reaching third on a wild pitch, and
Peyton Martin tripled, driving in two more runs. The Choctaws managed three runs in their half, but West Florida maintained a 13-6 advantage through seven innings.
Pettay led the charge with two doubles and two RBIs. Stokes scored three runs and hit a double, while Taylor contributed with two hits, including a double, and scored twice.
Braden Rapp got the start, pitching five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out two and walking one.
UWF now holds a record of 26-20 and is 19-11 in the Gulf South Conference, while MC stands at 32-13 and 18-12 in the conference. Looking ahead, UWF will host Valdosta State University at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, April 24 at Jim Spooner Field.
