UWF Takes The Win in High Scoring Game

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The University of West Florida secured a high-scoring 12–10 victory over Valdosta State University on Friday at Jim Spooner Field. 

West Florida opened the game with a strong performance in the first inning. Zack Stokes singled to right field and advanced on Trent Kelly's double. Tanner Taylor brought Stokes home with a groundout, followed by Greg Pettay's RBI single that scored Kelly. 

In the second inning, UWF extended its lead significantly. Alex Urias and Stokes each singled, and Kelly drove in Urias with a single. William Lybrook's double added two more runs, scoring Stokes and Kelly. Peyton Martin reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Taylor to score, and Pettay's single drove in Lybrook. West Florida ended the inning ahead 7–0.

Valdosta State responded in the third inning with two runs. The Argos added another run in the fourth inning. Lybrook doubled and scored on Martin's sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 8–4 after Valdosta State scored two more in their half of the inning.

In the sixth inning, West Florida capitalized on a Valdosta State error. Taylor scored on a throwing error, and Pettay's sacrifice fly brought home Lybrook, making the score 10–5. The seventh inning saw Spencer score on a double play.

Valdosta State mounted a comeback in the eighth inning with a three-run homer, but West Florida maintained its lead. Pettay's RBI single in the bottom half ensured the Argos held a 12–10 lead.

Colton Dorsey pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out four batters. Blake Thomas provided 1.2 innings of relief, conceding two hits over his 21-pitch outing. Scheetz closed the game with a solid performance, striking out two in one inning to earn his 11th save of the season.

The Argos will finish their last regular season series at home with a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Seniors will be recognized prior to the first game, starting at 12:30 p.m.
