Argos Fall to Flames; Will Face Delta State in Elimination Game

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The University of West Florida fell to Lee University in a close contest, 10–8, on Friday in the second round of the NCAA DII South Regional. The Argonauts rallied with five runs in the ninth inning, but Lee's early lead proved insurmountable.

In the second inning, Lee took an early lead, scoring four runs. The Argonauts responded in the third inning as Peyton Martin singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Zack Stokes drove Martin home with a single up the middle, making it 6–1 after Lee added two more in the bottom half.

In the fifth inning, Stokes singled and scored an unearned run after a fielding error on a ball hit by Tyler Brobst. The score was 7–2 through five innings. The sixth inning saw Lee extend its lead to 10–2 with a three-run inning.

In the eighth inning, the Argonauts added a run when Greg Pettay scored on a fielding error after Alex Urias singled. West Florida mounted a comeback in the ninth inning. Jake Cooper and Stokes led off with singles, setting up Trent Kelly for a three-run homer. Pettay later added a two-run homer, narrowing the deficit to 10–8, which stood as the final score.

Colton Dorsey pitched 2 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 4 batters. Elijah Roberts entered in relief, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits over 2/3 inning. Eli Lamb contributed 2.2 innings, surrendering 3 earned runs on 2 hits, including a home run, while walking 3. Garrett Brewer provided 2 innings of relief, allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits and striking out 3 batters. Blake Thomas closed the game with 2/3 inning, striking out 1 of the 2 batters he faced.

The Argos will face No. 4 Delta State at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Jim Spooner Field.
