Men's Golf Rallies Into Seventh Place After Slow Start

BOULDER CREEK, Nev. – It was a slow start in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship, but the Argos were able regroup and move into seventh place with a 285 (-3).

TJ Thompson and Per Ekelund both shot sub-70 to lead UWF. Thompson carded a 67 (-5) and is currently tied for fourth place in the tournament. The junior posted six birdies and one bogey in the round, including four birdies on the front nine. Ekelund shot a 69 (-3) and is tied for tenth place. After two bogeys in the first three holes the junior settled in and finished the round with five birdies and 10 pars.

Cooper Tendick was one over par in his up-and-down round but finished two over following a penalty stroke added at the end of the round for a controversial ruling on hole No. 16.

Both Eddie Lee and Max Page rebounded from a tough opening nine holes to gain momentum on the back nine. Lee was six over through nine but finished the round three under. Page came back from a double bogey on hole 11 to eagle hole No. 13 and then post birdies on 16 and 18.

The Argos will be back on the course for the second round beginning at 8:25 a.m. on Tuesday morning. UWF will be grouped with Gannon and Missouri-St. Louis, who is currently leading the tournament.
