OXFORD, Ala. — No. 4 seed West Florida won the first game of the Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship with an 8-1 victory over No. 3 seed Mississippi College on Saturday at Choccolocco Park.
Scoring started in the second inning for the Argos,
Tyler Brobst doubled to right center and later scored on a wild pitch.
Greg Pettay walked and crossed the plate on
Zack Stokes' RBI single, putting West Florida ahead 2-0.
In the fourth inning, Pettay scored again on a sacrifice fly by Stokes after reaching third on a double by
Hudson Spencer. This extended the lead to 3-0. West Florida added another run in the sixth, with Pettay scoring on an RBI single by
Trent Kelly.
The seventh inning saw
Tanner Taylor hit a solo home run to right field, followed by
Jay Henderson, a pinch runner, scoring on Pettay's single through the left side, bringing the score to 6-0. West Florida finished strong in the ninth inning with
Alex Urias doubling to left center and scoring on
Jake Cooper's RBI double. Cooper later scored on Spencer's single up the middle, concluding their scoring at 8-1.
Colton Dorsey delivered a standout performance for the Argos, pitching 7 innings without allowing an earned run. He gave up just one hit while striking out four and walking three, throwing 112 pitches with 68 strikes.
Braden Rapp contributed with a solid inning of relief, surrendering two hits and striking out one on 18 pitches.
Elijah Roberts closed the game, pitching the final inning with one run, one hit, and two strikeouts over 29 pitches.
The Argos will move on and play Sunday, May 3 at 2:30 p.m. against No.6 seed Trevecca Nazarene.
