OXFORD, Ala. — The Argonauts advanced in the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament with a 7–5 win over Trevecca Nazarene on Sunday at Choccolocco Park.
West Florida and Trevecca Nazarene both put runs on the board in a high-scoring first inning. Trevecca Nazarene scored four runs, highlighted by a two-run homer. The Argonauts responded with four runs of their own.
Zack Stokes, hit by a pitch, scored on a single by
Tanner Taylor.
Trent Kelly walked and later scored on an infield hit by
Alex Urias.
Tyler Brobst's fielder's choice brought home Taylor, and
Greg Pettay added another run with a fielder's choice, tying the game at 4–4 after one inning.
In the second inning,
Zack Stokes hit a solo home run to right center, giving the Argonauts a 5–4 lead through two innings. The third inning saw
Greg Pettay reach base with a single and steal second.
Peyton Martin then drove him in with a single up the middle, extending the Argonauts' lead to 6–4 after three innings.
The Argos added another run in the fourth inning.
Trent Kelly walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt by
William Lybrook, pushing the lead to 7–4. Trevecca Nazarene trimmed the deficit in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 7–5.
Tucker Ricks started on the mound for West Florida, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out five batters.
Blake Thomas delivered 1.2 innings in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out one, earning his fifth win of the season.
Elijah Roberts contributed two innings with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.
Micky Scheetz closed the game with one inning of work, recording two strikeouts to earn his 13th save.
West Florida will play tomorrow, May 4, at 2:30 p.m. against No. 2 seed Lee.
