BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior midfielder Sean Reynolds (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS) became the first West Florida men’s soccer player and just the second in Gulf South Conference history to earn both player and defender of the Week awards in a career, as he was named GSC Player of the Week on Tuesday. Junior defender Marquel Waldron (Warwick, Bermuda/Saltus Grammar School) also earned GSC Defender of the Week honors to make it a sweep for UWF.
Reynolds was a two-time GSC Defender of the Week during the 2009 season, and now playing in a midfield role in 2010 he earns his first GSC Player of the Week honor. The only previous men’s soccer player to win both player and defender of the week in the GSC was Lincoln Memorial’s Diogo Silvy in 2005.
The junior out of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. scored his first two goals of the year in West Florida’s 2-0 win at Harding on Sunday. Reynolds scored the first with his feet and the second with his head, and both goals were in the game’s first 10 minutes. With the win UWF improved to 5-3-2 overall and 2-0 in GSC play.
Waldron captained the UWF defense in a week that the team allowed just one goal in three games. Waldron played all but two minutes in UWF’s 1-1 tie against NAIA power William Carey at home on Tuesday. The team went on the road over the weekend, picking up shutout wins at Ouachita Baptist on Friday and at Harding on Sunday. The UWF back line allowed just seven shots against OBU on Friday and seven against Harding on Sunday. Waldron added an assist on the second goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Harding.
UWF will face Gulf South Conference opponent and regional rival Christian Brothers this Saturday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola. Fans can follow all of the action with live video and live stats at www.GoArgos.com.
