Historic Night by Mathis Gives UWF 88-70 Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Senior Marquis Mathis was a perfect 11-of-11 from the field as his 23 points helped lead the University of West Florida men’s basketball team past Arkansas-Fort Smith, 88-70.

Mathis (Columbus, Ohio/Cincinnati State CC) tied a school and NCAA record with his single game shooting percentage of 1.000 and is the first Argonaut to go perfect from the field after taking more than nine shots.

West Florida (7-3) gave up the opening basket to the Lions before Peter Connole (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian Academy) tied things up with a layup. Mike Whisman (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration HS) then went coast-to-coast, picking off a Lion inbound pass before laying one in to give the Argos the lead for good.

A 6-0 run extended the UWF advantage over Arkansas-Fort Smith (6-5) to 28-15 late in the first half with the Lions closing the gap late, going on a 9-0 run on the Argos to cut the lead back down to three. A pair of jumpers by Terrance Beasley (Pensacola, Fla./Tulane) and Martell Buie (Orlando, Fla./Wallace State CC-Hanceville) to end the half put UWF up, 43-36.

West Florida opened up the second half by sinking four straight field goals to go up 51-36 over Fort Smith. A Lion bucket at the 8:35 mark cut the Argo lead down to a single-digit margin for the last time in the contest with Moore hitting a jumper shortly thereafter to make it a 10-point ball game.

UWF then held the Lions scoreless for the last 1:30 as they ran away to an 88-70 victory, extending their home court win streak to five games.

Moore also finished in double-digits with 16 points to go along with Connole’s 10. As a team, UWF smashed their season high field goal percentage mark by going 35-of-54 to go 64.8 percent from the field. The previous high came during the Argo’s last game over Shaw when they shot 57.7 percent.

The Argos were also lights out from the free throw-line, going 18-of-22 with Moore and Mike Lewis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Eastern Kentucky) each going 4-for-4.

Moore also led the team in rebounds with eight as the Argos outrebounded the Lions, 37-23.

The Argos will wrap up the McDonald, Fleming, Moorhead Classic tomorrow as they host No. 25 Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m. For more information on West Florida basketball and on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
