Argos drop doubleheader against Spring Hill

West Florida falls 5-0 and 6-3 in doubleheader

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Spring Hill College Wednesday afternoon. The Argonauts (1-9, 0-3 GSC) were held to just four hits in two games by the new NCAA Division II member.
 
In two games, West Florida was led offensively by Jessica Wilkinson (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) who went 1-for-4 with one homerun and two RBI.
 
Game 1: West Florida 0, Spring Hill 5
 
It was a tough day at the plate for the Argos, and could only muster one hit in the first game against the Badgers. Opposing pitcher Caroline Sagrera was dominate for SHC after going the complete game and striking out 15 batters.
 
Senior Hannah Camp (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park HS) registered the only hit for the Argos while Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) reached base on an error.
 
Sophomore Rebecca Hein (Vestavia Hills, Fla./Vestavia Hills HS) was solid in the circle after going 6.1 innings and only gave up four hits, one earned run, and struck out three batters and was credited with the loss.
 
Game 2: West Florida 3, Spring Hill 6
 
West Florida came ready to play in the second game and in the first inning, put up two runs after Wilkinson hit a two RBI homerun. The Argos would add a run in the third inning to make it 3-0 before the Badgers would get their first runs in the fifth to make it 3-2. However, Spring Hill would come out in the top of the seventh and score four runs after multiple errors by UWF and eventually won 6-3 after the seventh.
 
Wilkinson, Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College), and Meghan Toney (Huntsville, Ala./Madison County HS) each registered a hit in the game for West Florida.
 
Junior Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind,/Wabash Valley JC) was credited with the loss after going all seven innings, gave up eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out eight batters.
 
West Florida will continue conference play again this weekend when they travel to Valdosta, Georgia to take on No. 2 Valdosta State University Feb. 21-22.
