PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 25 West Florida baseball team swept a doubleheader against Christian Brothers to extend its winning streak to three Friday at Jim Spooner Field.
The Argonaut (10-5, 4-4) pitching staff allowed just three runs, one earned, in the doubleheader while combining for 19 strikeouts.
"Give Christian Brothers credit because they really fight you," UWF coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "They're tough outs at the plate.
On the day,
Chase Kiefer (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic HS) went 3-for-6 with a walk and a run and
Jordan Stark (Flowood, Miss./Jones County CC) went 2-for-4 with a double, three walks and two runs.
Game One: West Florida 3, Christian Brothers 1 UWF won the first game of the series following a pair of strong pitching performances.
Jarrod Petree (Apopka, Fla./Central Florida) pitched eight innings, allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts.
"We got a good pitching performance from
Jarrod Petree," Jeffcoat said. "He settled in and was really lights out. We needed a deep pitching performance like that."
UWF allowed one run in the fifth but tied the game after an RBI single from
Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla./Hagerty HS). The Argonauts added two more runs in the sixth after a pair of hits and a pair of sacrifice bunts.
Ronnie May (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS) closed the game with three strikeouts in the ninth for the save.
"Give their lefty credit. He kept us off balance all day," Jeffcoat said. "We were able to finally manufacture some runs, and
Ronnie May did a good job closing it out with a great ninth inning."
Game Two: West Florida 6, Christian Brothers 2 UWF surrendered two runs in the top of the first but responded by scoring four in the bottom half of the inning on two hits and a pair of sacrifices.
Walker O'Connor (Bedford, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) pitched a complete game, allowing two unearned runs in seven innings with seven strikeouts in his first start of the season.
"I thought
Walker O'Connor really settled down after that first inning," Jeffcoat said. "He really shut them down and made some quality pitches."
The Argos added runs in the third and fourth, scoring on a wild pitch and a
Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn./Wake Forest) RBI single.
"We still need to clean the defense up some," Jeffcoat said. "I'm real proud of the sweep, but we've got to come out with same intensity tomorrow and try to improve."
UWF will conclude the series against Christian Brothers Saturday, Feb. 28, at noon at Jim Spooner Field.
