PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team dropped a doubleheader with No. 8 Alabama Huntsville on Saturday at the UWF Softball Complex. West Florida (6-19, 3-11 GSC) fell in game one by a score of 7-0 before losing 6-4 in game two.
Sophomore
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) was tagged with both losses on the day after pitching 4.2 innings over the span of two games. Taylor struck out four batters and allowed five earned runs on the day.
UWF was held to only two hits in the game one loss as UAH pitcher Kimberly Jack went 7.0 innings with one strikeout and two walks while allowing no runs in the outing.
Juniors
NiCole Dobernecker (Charter Oak, Iowa Iowa Central CC) and
Lauren Register (Vernon, Fla./Vernon HS) tallied hits for West Florida in game one.
UWF responded in game two with a three-run first inning. Senior
Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Lake-Sumter State College) tripled down the right field line to score two runs as West Florida took a 2-1 lead. Freshman
Meghan Toney (Huntsville, Ala./Madison County HS) added to the lead as she drove in Barnard later in the inning with a single to left field.
West Florida extended its lead in the bottom of the second inning as junior
Chelsy Krantz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/ Iowa Central CC) hit a RBI double up the middle to score senior
Jordan Camp (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley HS) as UWF took a 4-1 lead.
Junior
Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind./ Wabash Valley JC) had a strong outing in game two with 6.0 innings pitched while scattering nine hits with only one walk while allowing three earned runs.
Down 4-1, Alabama Huntsville tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as Victoria Crumpton hit an RBI single to third base before Victoria Frith drove in a pair of runs off a single to tie the game at four runs apiece.
The Chargers took control in the top of the seventh inning as Emily Glover hit a RBI double into deep center field before Abby Roberts drove in Glover off a single to right field as UAH took a 6-4 lead to seal the game.
West Florida will play No. 8 Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m. to wrap up the Gulf South Conference series at the UWF Softball Complex.
