PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 26 West Florida baseball team swept Union (Tenn.) in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Jim Spooner Field on Saturday. The UWF pitching staff did not allow an earned run all day, as the Argonauts defeated the Bulldogs 10-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second game.
Game 1: West Florida 10, Union 2Union (3-14, 2-9 GSC) got on the board in the top of the first with an unearned run off UWF (13-7, 7-4 GSC) starting pitcher
Jarrod Petree (Apopka, Fla.), but the Argos responded to tie the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by
Sean Plunkett (Ocala, Fla.). The Argos then broke the tie on an RBI single by
Kyle Hamner in the third (Maitland, Fla.), bringing in the first of three runs that inning. UWF added another run in the seventh and five more in the eighth in the win.
Petree (2-0) pitched eight innings to earn the victory, and the right-hander allowed the one unearned run on four hits and one walk. He also struck out eight batters, coming one away from the season-high he set against Christian Brothers last weekend.
Ronnie May (Apopka, Fla.) allowed an unearned run in the ninth while finishing the game for the Argos.
Marty Coursey (0-4) was credited with the loss for Union after allowing four runs in 5.2 innings pitched.
Ledarious Clark (Meridian, Miss.) and
Chase Kiefer (Pensacola, Fla.) were the offensive stars for UWF, as both hit 4-for-5 in game one. Clark had a triple, two runs, two RBIs and one steal, while Kiefer hit his second home run of the year, stole two bases, scored two runs and drove in four.
Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla.) also had a multi-hit game for the Argos, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn.) played a big role as well, as he walked three times and scored two runs for UWF.
"It starts with pitching," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Jarrod gave us a great start again. He gave up the one run in the first, but he then shut them down pretty quickly and got us back into the dugout every inning. Our offense finally got going. When your 1-2 guys in the order, Chase and Ledarious, go 8-for-10 you ought to be able to score some runs."
Game 2: West Florida 2, Union 0The Argos survived a pitchers' duel in the second game, as UWF's
Walker O'Connor (Bedford, Mass.) and Union's Teddy Christie traded zeros on the scoreboard for the first three innings. The Argos broke the tie in the fourth on an RBI single by
Lee Dunnam (Maitland, Fla.), and they added another in the fifth after Hamner doubled, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a wild pitch.
O'Connor (4-1) earned his team-leading fourth victory of the year after holding Union off the scoreboard for five innings. The right-hander scattered seven hits and one walk while striking out six.
Reed Bright (Pelham, Ala.) earned his first save with two scoreless innings, and he had to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam to do so.
Christie (1-2) was the losing pitcher in game two, allowing two runs while striking out eight in a six-inning complete game effort.
"Give a lot of credit to their pitcher," said Jeffcoat. "He was living on the outer half of the plate and had some good velocity with movement. He was hard to square up, but we were able to scratch across a few runs. Walker gave us a solid five innings on the mound. Reed came in and got into some trouble, but we were able to get out of it and preserve the shutout."
"It was good to get two good wins at home and in conference play," Jeffcoat continued. "We need to come back out with the same energy and finish this thing up tomorrow."
The GSC series with Union will end on Sunday with a single game, and first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. For information on all UWF athletics, visit
