PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Softball team lost its final game of the series against Union (Tenn.) University 2-1 Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts (5-16, 3-9 GSC) totaled nine hits in the game to just five for the Lady Bulldogs, but left nine runners on base to fall to the Gulf South Conference opponent.
"We clearly out hit them," said head coach
Melissa Paul. "But we didn't have timely hitting. We left too many runners on base, but for the most part our offense is coming around and will give us momentum the rest of the season."
Sophomore
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) dominated in the circle and pitched six scoreless innings for West Florida. However, a two run six inning derailed Taylor from the win with UWF unable to produce the tying run.
West Florida opened the game with a lot of energy and came out in the first inning looking to score. UWF scored one run on three hits in the first inning to get on the scoreboard, including doubles from
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College) and
Kaylen Rowell (Pensacola, Fla./Tate HS).
The Argos were led offensively by Rowell who finished the day 2-for-3 with one double and an RBI. Senior
Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS) was the only other Argo to register multiple hits after she went 2-for-4, and a total of six Argos tallied a hit in the game.
UWF will next play on Tuesday, March 10 when they host a non-conference match-up against Mercyhurst (Pa.) University starting at 3 p.m. CT.
