Game Notes: UWF hosts Delta State in regular season finale

Argos and Statesmen battle for GSC Tournament berths

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida baseball team hosts Delta State in its regular-season finale at Jim Spooner Field April 25-26. The Argonauts and Statesmen are both fighting to clinch berths in the GSC Tournament May 2-5.

UWF (28-16, 19-11) sits in fifth in the GSC standings behind fourth-place DSU (22-14, 15-8).

The Statesmen have had seven GSC games canceled due to weather so far this season, but are riding a five-game winning streak and are 20-6 since starting the season 2-8. DSU is 12-3 in April. The Argonauts are 9-4 in April and are 9-3 in their last 12 conference games.

Sunday will be senior day at Jim Spooner Field.

Tournament Seeding

The top seed in the 2015 Gulf South Conference Tournament will go to the winner of the series between top-ranked West Alabama and second-place Alabama Huntsville. If the series were to be shortened to two games, UAH would have to win both games to overtake UWA.

UWF and DSU each need just one win or one North Alabama loss to clinch a spot in the GSC Tournament. The only way either team would not make the tournament is if they were swept and UNA swept Shorter. If the series was shortened to two games due to weather, UWF and DSU would clinch a berth in the GSC Tournament regardless of the outcome of those games.

Argo Pitching Staff Leads the Way

UWF's team ERA and opponent's batting average are the second best in the conference at 3.08 and .243.

The Argo staff leads the league in innings pitched (367.2), strikeouts (324), fewest walks allowed (85), fewest wild pitches (20) and fewest balks (1).

UWF possess three of the top five pitchers and four of the top 10 in the GSC in ERA. Walker O'Connor (2.01) is second, Brandon Nagem (2.02) is third, and Reed Bright (2.45) is fifth. Jarrod Petree (3.00) ranks tenth.

UWF pitchers have the best stolen-base allowed percentage in the GSC (.538). UWF has allowed a conference low 14 steals and has caught 12 base runners.

Catcher Kyle Hamner leads the GSC in stolen-base allowed percentage (.524). He's allowed 11 steals and caught 10 base runners in 41 games played.

In addition, Nagem was named to the Brett Tomko Award semifinalist list.
