MIAMI – The Miami Marlins have called up former University of West Florida baseball pitcher Brian Ellington to join the 25-man roster Monday afternoon. Ellington replaces relief pitcher Carter Capps in the Marlins bullpen after Capps was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Ellington played for UWF in 2012 and was drafted by the Marlins in the 16
th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, making him one of the highest draft picks in UWF history.
He is enjoying his best year as a professional, as he's posted a 2.44 earned run average in 44.1 innings between two minor league levels, striking out more than a batter per inning and holding opposing batters to a .182 batting average.
"I'm just happy and proud for Brian, and obviously happy for the program," UWF baseball head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "He's worked his tail off and is a great representative for the university and the program, and we hope he can stick."
Ellington recently competed in the Pan-Am games in Toronto as a member of Team USA. He was one of 12 pitchers on the silver medal-winning roster and threw 2.2 innings over four games in the tournament, striking out 5, and allowing just three hits and 1 run.
