CLINTON, Miss. – The University of West Florida baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision against Mississippi College on Friday night to open Gulf South Conference competition. It marks just the first occasion UWF has dropped a contest to the Choctaws, as UWF-MC began playing each other last season and UWF would go on to sweep the inaugural series in 2015.

West Florida now sits at 3-5 on the season with a 0-1 conference mark while Mississippi College continues a solid start to the 2016 campaign, standing at 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Mississippi College got the bats going early, posting a two-run first inning and a four-run second inning to jump out to a 6-1 lead after two. UWF chipped away with a pair of runs in the third and a run in the fourth, however a three-run fifth inning for the MCwould provide some insurance and helped seal a Choctaw victory.

Starting pitcher Brandon Nagem allowed six runs, with just two being earned, while surrendering six hits. Troy Brown came in to relieve Nagem, and started strong by retiring eight consecutive Mississippi College hitters to start his outing. Jarrod Petree, who came in to get Brown out of a jam, struck out the one and only batter he faced. Sean Kennedy pitched three strong innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run, while striking out the side in order in the home half of the seventh inning.

Jean Figueroa and Justin Ambrosino each recorded two hits with an RBI in the fourth and fifth spots in the order to lead the Argonaut bats. Nic Strasser added an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Nick Kerkmann, who reentered the lineup for the first time since Feb. 6, extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine games.

UWF and MC wrap up their opening conference series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Frierson Field.
