February 19, 2015 BOX SCORE: GM1 PDF | GM1 HTML | GM 2 PDF | GM 2 HTML CLINTON, Miss. – The bats erupted for the University of West Florida baseball team during Saturday's double-header, as UWF would win game one by a 20-run margin before besting Mississippi College 8-1 in game two. UWF's game one total of 22 runs is the biggest scoring outburst since March 23, 2011 when the Argos went off for 24 runs against Columbus State.
It also marks as the largest run total for UWF in a doubleheader since the Argonauts put together 33 runs in a double header against Concordia-Selma on Feb. 11, 2010.
With the victories, UWF improves to an even 5-5 on the season after taking two of three from the first Gulf South Conference series of the 2016 season. The Choctaws now sit at 6-4 with a 1-2 record in the league.
Game 1: West Florida 22, Mississippi College 2 UWF started strong by putting up a five-spot in the first inning via a pair of RBI singles coming from
Jean Figueroa and
Justin Ambrosino, before freshman
Robert Lopez came through with a three-run blast to left field, his second of the season.
Two innings later, West Florida posted a four-run inning thanks to RBI singles from
Colby Brown,
Ladeavon Matthews and Lopez. The Choctaws would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, however that would be all the offense Mississippi College would muster.
Walker O'Connor continued to dominate as the reigning NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week tossed six innings, allowing two runs with neither of them being earned and allowed only five hits.
UWF would record six-run innings in the fifth and seventh innings, forcing the game to be concluded early. Matthews hit his GSC-leading fourth home run of the season for two runs in the fifth, while
Nic Strasser cleared the bases for a 3-RBI double.
Jimmy Redovian singled through the left side to plate an Argonaut run in the sixth.
UWF would cap off the scoring via RBIs from
Brandon Tyler,
Matt Sullivan, Strasser, Lopez, and Redovian in the seventh. Eight of nine in the UWF starting lineup would score at least two runs, including four players who scored three runs.
Josh McLaney came on to finish the Argonauts' 20-run victory, recording three strikeouts in the seventh inning to cap things off.
Strasser and Lopez each posted a team-best 5 RBI in game one, with Strasser going 3-for-4 with two walks at the plate while Lopez went a perfect 3-for-3 with three walks. Matthews went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Brown posted a multi-hit performance with a 2-for-5 performance with two RBI.
Game 2: West Florida 8, Mississippi College 1 The Argo bats wasted no time in game two to continue to press offensively, as UWF put up another five-spot in the first inning of game two. The first inning featured three RBI doubles, coming off the bats of Matthews, Redovian and
Kyle Hamner. Figueroa got the scoring started for UWF with an RBI single down the right field line scoring Strasser.
Brown would contribute an RBI double in the fifth before Figueroa and Tyler concluded the scoring with an RBI single each.
JT Granat got the start on the mound for UWF, throwing five solid innings to get his second win of the season. Granat tossed five innings surrendering one run on for hits, before
Anthony Mazzurco and Steven McClellan would toss an inning apiece to seal the double-header sweep.
Figueroa and Matthews each had 3-for-4 performances in game two, while Redovian contributed a 2-for-4 showing with a team-high 2 RBI in the game. Lopez continued his impressive day with a 2-for-3 display including a pair of singles.
Key performances on the day include Lopez, who went 5-6, and Strasser who went 5-7. The double play duo combined for 11 RBI on the day.
West Florida now awaits a midweek matchup against Spring Hill in Mobile, Alabama on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. UWF will continue GSC competition next weekend when UWF hosts Valdosta State for a three-game series this weekend.
