March 29, 2016 BOX SCORE: PDF | HTML PENSACOLA, Fla. - After facing an early 2-0 deficit in the second inning, the University of West Florida baseball team was able scrounge up two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take the lead and ultimately defeat the University of Montevallo Falcons by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday night.
Anthony Mazzurco earned his first win as a member of the UWF baseball program, throwing five innings while allowing just one earned run. After Mazzurco surrendered a run each in the first and second, the southpaw was able to settle in and not allow another run in his final three innings of work.
Facing a 2-1 deficit in the fourth inning with
Ladeavon Matthews on first, freshman
Robert Lopez lined one to a gap in right field for a triple to score Matthews and tie the score at 2-2. Lopez would later score in the inning, as
Kyle Hamner hit a single through the left side to score Lopez and give West Florida a 3-2 lead.
The Argonauts (20-11) would not look back from there, as the UWF lineup and UWF bullpen continued to apply the pressure and allowed the Argos to push away from the Falcons. In a three-run sixth inning,
Ben Emery and
Nic Strasser each recorded RBI while
Jimmy Redovian was able to push another run across in the eighth inning with a single that allowed
Matt Sullivan to score.
The pitching staff did not allow a run after the second inning, largely in thanks to a standout performance from freshman
Gray Dorsey. Dorsey went three innings and allowed just one base runner in his outing. The Gulf Breeze native started his day by retiring the first six batters he faced.
Josh McLaney took over in the ninth and allowed just one hit to end the contest and secure UWF's 20
th win of the 2016 campaign.
Emery and
Justin Ambrosino each recorded multi-hit games, as Ambrosino posted a 2-for-4 day while Emery had a 2-for-3 showing. Seven of nine starters had at least one hit for UWF.
With his fourth inning single, Hamner extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Hamner's current streak is the longest for UWF since 2010 and is the fifth longest streak in program history.
Montevallo (18-16) suffered from three errors and in the contest, causing four of seven UWF runs to be unearned. The Falcon pitching staff allowed 10 free passes in the game, divided between five hit West Florida batters and five walks.
West Florida baseball looks to extend its winning streak to seven tomorrow, when the Argonauts and Falcons wrap up its two-game midweek non-conference series at Jim Spooner Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m., with freshman left-handed pitcher
Troy Brown expected to make his fourth start of the season.
