March 6, 2016 BOX SCORE: PDF | HTML FLORENCE, Ala. – After a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the University of West Florida baseball team fell to the University of North Alabama Lions by a score of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.
UWF (11-7, 6-3 GSC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after UWF strung together a first inning with four singles.
Alex Greene came around to score after a
Justin Ambrosino single, while
Nick Kerkmann grounded into a fielder's choice to score
Jean Figueroa to cap the scoring for UWF.
The Argonaut bats would be quiet for the remainder of the game, as the team was able to scrounge up just five hits for the remaining eight innings.
West Florida sent left-hander
Anthony Mazzurco to the mound for his second start of the season, as Mazzurco would throw four innings and surrender three runs on eight hits while walking one batter and striking out three.
North Alabama (11-5, 6-3 GSC) chipped away at UWF's early lead, scoring one run in the second before a two-run fourth inning allowed the Lions to take a 3-2 lead. UNA was able to put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning.
The Argos ran into one of the hottest pitchers in the Gulf South Conference, as UNA starter Riley Sanderson recorded his fourth victory of the season throwing 7.2 innings with two runs, nine hits, and nine strikeouts. After Sanderson was roughed up in the first, the Lions' starter settled in and did not allow another UWF run for the remaining 6.2 innings of his outing.
Freshman southpaw
Troy Brown had an impressive showing, throwing 3.1 innings of relief and allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high seven and walking none. Brown, who entered the week with a 6.00 ERA, now owns a 2.92 ERA after two impressive outings this week.
Greene's first inning single extended the shortstop's hitting streak to 14 games, which is tied for the longest streak in the program since Greg Pron posted a 16-game hitting streak in 2011.
Kyle Hamner and
Jean Figueroa each handed in two-hit performances, while Hamner and
Jimmy Redovian were each able to record doubles in the contest. Figueroa has now reached base for 14 consecutive games.
With a 3-0 record in midweek games, UWF looks to maintain that perfect mark when hosting Spring Hill at Jim Spooner Field on Wednesday. First pitch against the Badgers is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
