Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWF and Valdosta State men's tennis teams have waged some epic battles on the hardcourt over the years. On Saturday in Montgomery, Ala, the rivals added another chapter to that history. Unfortunately for the Argos, the Gulf South Conference title match was at stake and went to the Blazers in a 5-4 final decision.

UWF (18-6) won two of three doubles matches before dropping four of the six singles contests at the O'Connor Tennis Center.

The Argonauts earned the first two points of the match when No. 3 ranked Alex Peyrot and Kenny Brasil were victorious at No. 1 and Pablo Borrero and Pablo Tellez claimed the tiebreaker for a 9-8 win at No. 3.

UWF extended its lead to 3-2 after a Blazer point at No. 2 and Argo win at No. 4 by Borrero. Valdosta took the next two points, grabbing a 4-3 edge before a win by Sebastian Sanchez at No. 5 knotted things at 4-4 with just the No. 3 match in progress.

There, Brasil and Fernando Rivas were deep in the third set after splitting the first two, 7-6 for Brasil and 6-0 for Rivas. The Blazers earned the final point with Rivas claiming the emotional matchup 6-4 in the third.

The loss snaps UWF's streak of 52-consecutive wins against GSC competition. It's last loss came to Valdosta in the 2011 NCAA South Regional.

UWF entered the first regional ranking at No. 2 this week and will find out it's NCAA destination on Tuesday, May 3.
