BOX SCORE
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The ninth-ranked UWF men's tennis team earned an early-season statement victory with a 7-2 decision on the road over fifth-ranked Valdosta State at the VSU Tennis Courts Sunday.
Â
UWF improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The Argos will now play their next four matches against league competition, beginning Saturday at home against Alabama Huntsville. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
Â
The Argos won two of the three doubles matches, receiving victories from the No. 1 team in the country in
Alex Peyrot and
Pedro Dumont. They claimed an 8-6 win to remain perfect on the year. At No. 2 doubles,
Gabriel Dias and
Warren Kuhn breezed to an 8-2 win.
Â
"They've always had a good team and that's a good win for us," UWF head coach
Derrick Racine said. "Anytime you are playing someone in the top 20, you are going to get tested. Valdosta is a good team that we will have play again if we want to win the conference."
Â
In singles play, UWF collected wins at five of the six positions, highlighted by Peyrot's 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 win at the No. 1 spot over third-ranked Leo Blay. The duo have faced each other at the No. 1 position each of the past three years now, with Peyrot winning three of the five matchups – Blay won both meetings last season and Peyrot earned two wins a year earlier.
Â
"Alex had lost that last two times they played and every time they play it's close," Racine said. This is good for his confidence as he's playing well right now."
Â
The singles win by Kuhn,
Serdar Bojadjieva, Dumont and
Alfonso Castellano all came in straight-sets for UWF.
