BOX SCORE
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The drama keeps building for the 9th-ranked UWF men's tennis team. On Saturday, they upset top-ranked Hawaii Pacific, 5-4, and on Sunday, it was undefeated and 7th-ranked Barry who fell victim to the Argonauts by the same 5-4 ledger at the Armstrong State Tennis Center.
Â
UWF improved to 9-1 and collected its third win over a top-10 team this season. The Argos got two doubles and three singles victories for their second-consecutive win over the Buccaneers when they were ranked No. 1. UWF downed Barry almost two years to the day on March 11, 2014 en route to a national championship season.
Â
On Sunday, the Argos grabbed the 2-1 lead after doubles, with the No. 2 team of
Gabriel Dias/
Pedro Roese and the No. 3 duo of 12th-ranked
Alfonso Castellano/
Pablo Tellez winning their matches.
Â
In singles play, UWF earned two more points with straight-set victories from Dias at No. 2 and
Sebastian Sanchez at No. 6 as the back-and-forth match was knotted at 4-4 and came down to the No. 5 contest. That's where Castellano and Fabian Pronnet split sets to force a third. Castellano stormed ahead 4-0 before Pronnet fough back to grab a 5-4 lead. But UWF's junior transfer from Pechina, Spain won the final two games to give the Argos the victory.
Â
UWF, which remained perfect in seven matches against South region opponents, will face No. 3 ranked Armstrong State (11-3) on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
