UWF Rolls Past Columbus State For 5-0 Decision

The Argonauts will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday at 10:00 am

BOX SCORE

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The top-ranked UWF men's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 win over Columbus State in a very intense match at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex Thursday.

The sixth-ranked UWF women's team dropped its first match in a month, falling 5-2 to the CSU women.

For the UWF men, they won their 16th-consecutive match as they improved to 22-1 overall. The women fell to 19-6 and saw their 11-match win streak come to a close.

The Argonauts scored the first three points with a sweep of the double matches. Alex Peyrot and Pedro Dumont – the nation's No. 1 ranked doubles team – broke open a close match with a pair of breaks in the eighth and tenth games on their way to a 8-5 win. Their tenth-straight victory came as they improved to 17-2 in dual play. UWF also collected wins at the No. 3 spot as Warren Kuhn and Pablo Tellez claimed an 8-3 win to get the scoring started. Gabriel Dias and Pedro Roese used an 8-5 victory to run their record to 14-0 this year. The Argos have not lost a No. 2 doubles match all season.

In singles play, Kuhn made quick work of Paul Sprengelmeijer, 6-1, 6-2 for the fourth point, before Serdar Bojadjiev clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Matei Avram at the No. 4 spot.

The women's match was a tightly contested one as expected with two top-10 teams. UWF earned the first point when Diana Vlad and Valeria Mantilla won at No. 3 doubles. The Cougars tied it up at 1-1 with a victory at the No. 2 position before claiming a 2-1 lead following a 9-8 (7-4) tiebreak victory at the top spot.

In the singles matches, the Argonauts' lone point came at the No. 1 slot as 34th-raned Paula Lopez defeated 29th-ranked Kirsa Utech, 6-3, 7-6. Lopez registered her seventh-straight win and ran her dual record to 14-7.

Both UWF squads will close out their regular season on Saturday at home with a match against Xavier (La.). First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. The Argos will then open Gulf South Conference Tournament play on Thursday as the No. 1 seed in each bracket.
