Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Florida baseball team tallied 27 hits in 16 innings of baseball to complete a doubleheader sweep (7-5, 10-4) of No. 24-ranked West Alabama at Tartt Field on Saturday afternoon.
UWF now stands at 23-13 on the year with a 15-8 Gulf South Conference record. The Argonauts have won 13 of their last 16 games.
Game 1: West Florida 7, West Alabama 5
UWF had four different leads in the series opener against West Alabama, but the Tigers mounted comebacks against 1-0, 3-1, 4-3, and 5-4 deficits. The Argonauts gained another lead and hold off any chance of a fifth comeback, with
Chase Kiefer and
Robert Lopez recording RBI in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to seal a 7-5 win.
West Alabama freshman starter Cole Waites led the GSC with a 1.49 ERA entering the contest, but the Argonauts tagged Waites for five runs – all earned – on eight hits in 4.1 innings.
UWF opened the scoring with a hard-hit RBI single by
Justin Ambrosino in the top of the first. After UWA erased UWF's advantage in the home half of the first, Kiefer posted his first RBI of the day on a single to right center.
Brandon Harmon drove in
Tanner May on an infield single to make it 3-1 and cap the second-inning scoring.
UWA posted a two-run bottom of the third, but again, the Argonauts jumped ahead via a
Matt Sullivan RBI double to bring home
Ladeavon Matthews in the top of the third.
With the score locked at 4-4,
Tanner Halstead drove in
Nick Kerkmann with a single to right to give UWF a 5-4 advantage. UWA brought home its last run of the game in the sixth, but Kiefer and Lopez's late RBIs ultimately proved to be the difference maker in a 7-5 victory.
Jarrod Petree went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Brian Browning earned his third of the win of the year and extended his scoreless inning streak to 19 with 2.2 innings of shutout relief. Browning got into a bit of trouble in the ninth, however
JT Granat retired both batters he faced and left both Tiger runners stranded in scoring position. Granat earned his team-high third save of the year with the effort.
Tanner May posted a season-high three hits in a 3-for-4 showing at the plate. Halstead, Matthews and Kiefer all posted two hits, with Kiefer recording a team-high two RBI in the contest.
Game 2: West Florida 10, West Alabama 4
UWF scored eight unanswered runs over the game's last three innings, erasing UWA's 4-2 lead that the Tigers built in the bottom of the fourth.
The beginning of the contest had a similar theme as UWF posted two runs in the top of the first, but the Tigers responded with three runs in the home half of the first.
With UWA leading 4-2, UWF posted a key two-run top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. After
Justin Ambrosino cut the Tigers' lead to 4-3 with a bunt single that allowed
Brandon Harmon to score, Ambrosino came around to score two batters later on a
Ladeavon Matthews single to right.
Ambrosino later gave the Argos its second lead of the ballgame, hitting an RBI single through the middle of the field to score
Robert Lopez.
Trace Penton went 2.2 innings in his start on the hill and allowed three runs on five hits.
Walker O'Connor came in of relief of Penton and recorded one of the biggest outs of the game, striking out Tiger left fielder Brock Montgomery to end the frame with runners on second and third to end the third inning.
Jared Middleton turned in his most dominant outing of the 2017 season, posting 3.2 innings of shutout relief with a season-high seven strikeouts. Each of the first five outs Middleton recorded were via strikeout and he allowed only three hits over the course of his outing.
Ambrosino led the team with a 3-for-4 performance in the No. 3 spot of the lineup.
Ladeavon Matthews turned in a 2-for-3 showing with a team-best two RBI, while
Chase Kiefer and
Robert Lopez had two hits apiece.
West Florida was aided by seven Tiger errors. Only four of UWA's 10 runs allowed were earned.
UWF will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
Jared Gonzalez is scheduled to make the start in the series finale.
