Benson Continues Ascent Through Career Record Book As Argos Look To 2019

The senior point guard is poised to reach heights few Argos have

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's basketball will resume play after the holiday break with a contest vs. LaGrange College Dec. 30. The game will be just the fourth at home for the team, but the Field House has seen history already this year. Senior guard Rashaan Benson has rewritten pieces of the UWF career record book on the home floor already this season and stands poised to continue his record-setting ways in 2019.

Benson provided an early highlight to the 2018-19 season when he became the program's all-time assists leader Nov. 20 vs. Spring Hill. The Memphis, Tenn. native  surpassed Deondre Boynton (411) for first place on the career list in his first chance in front of the UWF home crowd this season, dishing three dimes to move to 412 in his Argo career.

"It's a blessing," said Benson. "Honestly, coming in my freshman year, it wasn't even a thought in my head to even get the record. Just getting it means a lot. It's a credit to all the teammates I've had over the years."

He continues to climb the through the record book in other categories as well. The HomeLife Academy alum is now third on the career steals list with 127. He will have a chance to surpass former teammate DJ Thorpe (128) for second on the list when the Argos return to action Sunday. He sits just 12 steals behind Boynton, the program's all-time leader at 139.

Benson is also within striking distance of third-place on the program's career scoring list. With 159 points this season, he stands at 1,052 for his career. He is one of just four Argos ever to score 1,000 points and needs just 34 to surpass Mike Morgan (1,085) for third in the record book.

The point guard's consistency and durability have helped him to heights few have reached. He is second in Argo history in career field goal attempts (962) and should surpass the record set by Terrence Harris (999) in early 2019. He is one of only ten players in UWF men's basketball history to hit 100 three-pointers in his career and has maintained his efficiency while doing so. Benson entered this season seventh in program history with a career .387 clip beyond the arc.

"Those were a surprise," Benson said of rewriting the shooting and scoring records. "I mean, I never even thought about the three-point records. I just wanted to improve on my shooting every year as I got older because coming in my freshman year, I felt like that was the thing I needed to work on the most."

The UWF star's career began at an open tryout shortly after head coach Jeff Burkhamer assumed the reins of the program in early 2015.

"He and another kid drove down from Memphis on their own," said Burkhamer. "We had the workout and it came down to him and one other kid. We liked how Rashaan was able to use ball screens a little better, and he ended up being the guy… He was a homeschool kid, so he didn't get seen a lot by many people. It gave him an opportunity and gave us a heck of a point guard."

Benson is the only Argo currently on the roster who has played all four years under Burkhamer. The head coach anticipates Benson one day being an Argo Hall of Famer.

"He's had a great career, and he's done well academically," said Burkhamer. "He's had a terrific career here, on the court, off the court, in the classroom. He really is what we are trying to grow: being a good person, a good student and a good player. I think he's a guy people need to emulate."

After a road-heavy schedule to start the season, UWF men's basketball will play six games at home between Dec. 30 and Jan. 31 beginning with a 4:00 p.m. contest vs. LaGrange on Sunday. The Argos return to GSC action Jan. 3 at Valdosta State and host their first home conference game in more than a month vs. Montevallo Jan. 5.
