Patrick Corrigan Joins the Men’s Basketball Staff

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida has hired Patrick Corrigan as the new assistant men's basketball coach, head coach Tanner Smith announced on Wednesday.

"Pat is an outstanding addition to our staff," said Coach Smith. "His experience as a head coach, combined with his success at the Division I level, will bring tremendous value to both our program and our players. Pat's passion for player development, along with his relentless work ethic, embodies the qualities necessary for success here at the University of West Florida."

Corrigan comes to West Florida after serving as the head men's basketball coach at Ferrum College, where he helped lead the Panthers through one of the program's most successful stretches in recent history. In four seasons at Ferrum, Corrigan guided the Panthers to three straight conference tournament quarterfinal appearances and three consecutive 16-plus win seasons, marking the first time the program had accomplished that feat in more than 40 years.

"I couldn't be more excited to join Tanner at West Florida," said Corrigan. "I have a ton of respect for Tanner as a coach and person, and am grateful for the opportunity. We have known each other for a while now, and we have a like-minded vision of what a successful program looks like. West Florida has a rich history of success and so much potential with the transition to Division One. Excited to work with Coach Smith in creating a culture of success by helping our student-athletes become the best leaders and players they can be."

During the 2025-26 season, Corrigan led Ferrum through its transition from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas. After being picked 16th out of 16 teams in the preseason poll, the Panthers finished 16-11 overall and 14-6 in conference play, placing third in the league. The 14 conference wins marked the most in program history, while Corrigan was named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year. Ferrum's season included a win over No. 1-ranked UNC Pembroke, a seven-game winning streak and an appearance in the Conference Carolinas Quarterfinals.

Corrigan also helped develop multiple all-conference players during his time at Ferrum, including Gerren Jones, who ranked 10th nationally in scoring at 22.2 points per game and earned first team all-conference and second team all-region honors. Rodrigo Farias was named third team all-conference, while Alfredo Abel-Rivera averaged 16 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and finished his Ferrum career sixth all-time in scoring and third all-time in rebounds. Off the court, the Panthers posted a 3.47 team GPA in the fall semester.

Prior to his head coaching tenure at Ferrum, Corrigan served as an assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona, an NCAA Division II program in California. During the 2021-22 season, he helped the Broncos reach the NCAA Tournament, climb as high as No. 21 nationally, post one of the top defensive units in the country and produce three all-conference selections.

Corrigan also spent time with West Coast Elite, one of the largest AAU organizations on the West Coast, where he served as Director of College Placement and helped send 40 players to the college level. He also coached at Windward High School, working with three ESPN Top 50 players and helping the team reach the state playoff quarterfinals.

His previous experience at Ferrum included serving as an assistant coach in 2018-19 before being promoted to associate head coach for the 2019-20 season. That year, the Panthers posted a 15-12 record, a 10-win improvement, and earned wins over nationally ranked Guilford while recording the program's first ODAC Tournament victory.

Corrigan began his coaching career at Division the I level, spending five seasons on the men's basketball staff at UNC Charlotte from 2013-18. He served as Associate Director of Basketball Operations for his final three seasons after working as a program assistant and graduate assistant. During his time with the 49ers, the program won the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament with a victory over No. 14 Michigan, and 10 players went on to sign professional contracts.

A native of Richmond, Va., Corrigan was a four-year point guard at Hampden-Sydney College. He helped lead the Tigers to an ODAC regular season championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013, serving as team captain during his senior season. Corrigan graduated from Hampden-Sydney in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Math and Psychology
