HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – No. 1 UWF Men's Tennis Team (4-0) adds two more victories to their record as they defeat GSC opponents University of Alabama-Huntsville (2-4) and the University of North Alabama (1-3).
Up first for the Argos were the UAH Chargers, and due to expected showers, the matches were held indoors at the Athletic Club Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama. The reigning national champs raced off to dominant 3-0 lead after each team prevailed in doubles. Nicholas Springer and Alfonso Castellano won a commanding 8-4 match. Robin Rafaitin and Lucas Sanchez also won their doubles matchup with a score of 8-4. The top pair of Serdat Bojedjiev and Nicolas Lecoutre triumphed with an 8-5 victory.
Immediately after doubles, No. 7 Bojedjiev made quick work of Dylan Hall, only surrendering three games. No. 23 ranked senior Alfonso Castellano delivered the clench for the team, dominating Elliot Hopson 6-2, 6-3. Sanchez, Juan Cabbrera, and Rafaitin all won their matches in straight sets, giving the Argos an 8-0 lead over the Chargers. The lone point gained by UAH was on court five, where James Caddies scraped past Gerard Rodriguez 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.
UWF immediately hit the road and traveled to the Jimmy John's Tennis Center in Decatur, Alabama to face the University of North Alabama.
The North Alabama Lions proved to be a tricky opponent for the Argos. In the doubles, Springer/Castellano and Sanchez/Rafaitin eased pasted their respected challengers 8-3 and 8-4. On court one however, the fresh legs of the UNA pair Austin Racine and Miguel Garcia proved to much for the top pair of Bojedjiev/LeCoutre who fell 8-6.
With a 2-1 lead after doubles, the UWF were in need of three more matches for the victory. On courts five and six, Rafaitin and Juan Motta cruised past each of their opponents, only dropping one game per set. The clench came from court three as Cabrera pushed past Luca Cirenza 6-2 6-4. The remainder of the matches went in North Alabama's favor as multiple weary Argos tried to finish out the GSC contest. After a long day of matches, the Argos rallied past the Lions 5-4 and added two additional GSC wins to their record.
As a close to this Alabama weekend, the No. 1 UWF face Montevallo University in Montevallo, Alabama. Matches will commence at 1pm.
