No. 6 UWF Take Down NAIA Xavier (La.)

Bojadjiev clinches as No. 6 UWF add another win over NAIA program Xavier

PENSACOLA, Fla.-  The No. 6 UWF Men's Tennis Team (21-2, 11-0) downs NAIA's No. 2 Xavier University of Louisiana (10-11) 5-1 on Senior Day at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.

Before the start of the match, Senior Alfonso Castellano was recognized for all of his achievements throughout his career at UWF. Currently, Castellano holds the No. 65 ranking in the singles standings, and was ranked as high as 4no. 4 in doubles playing with teammate Nicholas Springer. The Spaniard was also a key member in the 2017 National Championship team, clinching the deciding match to secure the title to the Argos name.

After the ceremony, the No. 6 team refocused their attention on the doubles, recognizing that this top ranked NAIA school came prepared for a battle. On court 3, LeCoutre and Cabrera added a thirteenth victory to their current winning streak, defeating Andrieu and Cickhaoui 8-3. Shortly after, No. 14 duo Serdar Bojedjiev and Lucas Sanchez dismantled No. 3 Richard and Ablullah 8-4 on the top court. The lone point of the day scored by the Gold Nuggets came from court 2 after Anders and Fifea edged Springer and Castellano 9-7.

With only a one-point difference between the two teams after doubles, the intensity of the match escalated entering into the singles. Juan Cabrera an Robin  Rafaitin have yet to lose a singles match this season, and they both delivered the third and fourth points for the Argos on courts five and six, respectively. On the second court, No. 8 Bojedjiev stormed through the first set without dropping a single game against No. 17 Fifea. The second set, however, proved to be a much more difficult challenge for the Swede as Fifea stepped up his level. Both players refused to surrender their service games, and they were forced into a tiebreaker. The 2017 National Champion displayed his dominance in the tiebreak, and clinched the match to secure the win for the Argos.

The remainder of the matches were halted with the Argos were leading on all other courts.

The Argos conclude their regular season play with an 11 match-winning streak and maintain a perfect 6-0 record in away matches. With these results UWF will enter into the Gulf South Conference Championships as the top ranked seed. This tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday at the Lagoon Tennis Center in Montgomery, Alabama. In the first round, the No. 1 UWF will take on No. 8 Alabama-Huntsville.
