MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The eighth-ranked UWF men's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 5-0 loss to top-ranked Barry in the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis South I Regional final at the Buccaneer Tennis Center Tuesday.
Â
UWF dropped two early doubles matches, 8-2, before a tiebreaker loss at No. 1 put the Argos in a 3-0 hole heading into singles play.
Â
"Give credit to Barry. They played really well," UWF head coach
Derrick Racine said. "We had our chances at number one doubles and that was kind of the match. Against a good team like Barry, you aren't able to comeback from 3-0 very often."
Â
The Bucs (22-2) earned their two singles points at the first and second spots. At No. 1 Carlos Gomez defeated
Nicolas Lecoutre 6-3, 6-4, and Vivien Versier beat
Serdar Bojadjiev, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
Â
The Argonauts were up a set in three of the four remaining matches when the fifth point was secured.
Â
UWF ends the season with a 24-4 record with all four losses coming to teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Â
"We had a great season considering we had a lot of new blood on the team with guys who weren't in the lineup last year," Racine said. "We only had a couple of bad matches and unfortunately one was in the conference final and another today in the regional final."
