ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 7 ranked UWF men's tennis team dominated Cameron today winning 4-0 to move onto the next round. Cameron finishes their season 22-7 with a national ranking of No. 13 and regionally ranked No. 3.
The match was no easy feat with 95 degree weather and clear skies. The heat took a toll on both teams as the match went on for three and a half hours.
In doubles, the Argos took care of business at one doubles as No. 25 doubles duo Serdar Bojadjiev and Vitinho Galvao won 7-5 over No. 15 Vinicius Santos and Julen Gutierrez. Two doubles finished next with the same score of 7-5 as partners Pedro Cordeiro and Juan Motta defeated No. 44 Mritunjay Badola and Przemyslaw Zielinski.
In singles, the order of finish was one singles, six singles, and two singles. Finishing first was No. 5 Serdar Bojadjiev winning in consecutive sets, 7-6, 6-2 over No. 6 Vinicius Santos. Following him was Vitinho Galvao defeating Pierre Marion in consecutive sets 6-4, 7-5. For the clinching win, the Argos Redshirt-Sophomore Juan Cabrera defeated Mritunjay Badola of CU 7-6, 6-3.
The Argos are ranked No. 7 in the latest Oracle/ITA National DII rankings. West Florida is led by Serdar Bojadjiev who is ranked No. 5 in singles, followed by Juan Motta at No. 41 and Juan Cabrera at No. 74. Doubles play for West Florida is also strong with doubles duo Serdar Bojadjiev and Vitinho Galvao ranked No. 25 in the latest rankings after being previously ranked No. 46 the week before.
Barry is seeded No. 1 in the tournament with a 23-1 overall record and an undefeated conference record of 8-0. Barry is ranked No. 2 in the Oracle/ITA rankings along with six of their players in singles and two of their doubles teams.
Leading the Buccaneers is Junior Pierre Montrieul who is ranked No. 7 and is 9-3 in singles at the one spot this season. Barry also has two who are ranked at No. 28 and 29, Alejandro Ibanez and Carlos Gomez. The other three are 30 and below at No. 33, 46, and 75.
In doubles, the Buccaneers have doubles pair Bayldon and Montrieul ranked at No. 7 and Gallego and Palacios ranked No. 40.
All four West Florida NCAA Championship titles – 2004, 2005, 2014, and 2017 – came when the championship was played at Sanlando Park. The Argonauts are 19-2 all-time at the facility, which has hosted the event nine times and 9-4 in the finals.
UWF's history with Barry has been in the Argo's favor for the past several years. In 2018, the Argos lost to Barry 5-0 in Regionals ending their season, but that has been the Argos only loss against Barry in eight years.
In 2017, the Argos were in the NCAA DII Championship tournament where they won their fourth National Championship Title with a 5-2 win over Barry and had beat them in regular season play in March 5-4. In 2014, the Argos won against them in regular season on their home turf 6-3. In 2012, the Argos did it again and defeated the Buccaneers on their turf 5-4 during the season.
